Episode 8: Being stubborn is exhausting.

Shun Yu keeps drinking the alcoholic drinks that are being provided to Shang Zhou as ordered by Vice President Lee, but as the night grows older, so does his sobriety. When Shang Zhou notices Shun Yu’s level of inebriation and the efforts of other coworkers to set him up with women, he decides to take him away from the gathering. He then carries Shun Yu on his back and enters their villa while grumbling to himself that he will make him pay for it. After assisting Shun Yu in lying on the bed, Shang Zhou is pulled by him, and the latter ends up lying on top of the former. Shun Yu then pins Shang Zhou to the bed and rants about all of his work demands while staring at and occasionally stroking his face gently until he collapses on him. With Shun Yu motionless on top of him, Shang Zhou hugs him tightly and asks whether he is pretending to be drunk or pretending to be sober.

Shun Yu, who is now overcome with emotion, asks him why he would do anything for a simple secretary like him when he is the company owner. He flinches just as Shang Zhou is ready to kiss him on the lips after peppering his face with a kiss instead of answering his question. Then Shang Zhou rolls them over and kisses him deeply, ordering him to address him by his first name rather than president. Despite his initial attempts to fight it, Shun Yu eventually gives in and returns the kiss, continuing until Shang Zhou stops to let him breathe. He chastises him when he assumes that they may have shared alcohol residues through kissing after working so hard to prevent Shang Zhou from drinking. Despite admitting that he can control his drinking, Shang Zhou confesses that he refrained from drinking because he was worried that he might get horny and that it would be troublesome for the two of them. Shun Yu pushes Shang Zhou away when he tries to kiss him once more and questions whether he is doing it for him out of affection or simply for fun. He goes on to say that Shang Zhou must be doing it merely for enjoyment, which infuriates him because Shun Yu apparently believes that he will do anything for amusement. Shun Yu vigorously shakes his head when Shang Zhou asks whether he’ll allow anyone to touch him in any way simply because they are more powerful than him. With tears threatening to fall from his eyes, he voices out his wonder at why Shang Zhou would want someone who is not of the same social status as him. He then concludes bitterly that Shang Zhou is probably keeping him as a display and not because he needs him before he falls asleep.

The next morning, Shun Yu wakes up in Shang Zhou’s arms and goes back to pretending to sleep when the latter sees him attempting to stand up. He is pulled in close by a dozing Shang Zhou, who then whispers in his ear that he must accept responsibility for him and never drink again. Additionally, he reminds him to use his first name, exactly as last night. Fortunately or unfortunately for Shun Yu, he can still recall all of his insane activities from the previous evening, including their talk and kiss. Shang Zhou orders Shun Yu to stay in the room while he collects his thoughts in the shower after realizing that Shun Yu still intends to run despite remembering their kiss. He decides to reason out with Shun Yu once again to clarify their relationship. When he returns to the room, he is disappointed to find Shun Yu gone.

To reach Shun Yu, Shang Zhou hurries to his apartment and makes numerous calls, but the other never picks up. He waits patiently in front of the apartment complex where they had first gotten to know each other. Unexpectedly, the murals that originally depicted joyous scenes are now depicting sorrowful ones. Shun Yu, who is inside, continues to ignore Shang Zhou while contemplating his emotions. He reminds himself that they cannot be together because of their differences after realizing he has fallen for him. Shang Zhou, on the other hand, hopes Shun Yu will explain to him how he can make things right between the two of them because, as he admits, growing up in his environment, no one ever taught them how to mend relationships.

The next day, Shun Yu reads all of Shang Zhou’s messages from the day he ran away. The tone of his messages has changed from being confused to frustrated to regretful as Shang Zhou waits for his return. Just then, Lisa, who finds him standing alone in the stairway, asks him what happened between him and Shang Zhou. He simply tells her that he wants to quit as he is unqualified for the position, rather than answering directly. Lisa claims that whether Shun Yu considers her a friend or not, she is worried about him because he doesn’t appear to be fine at all. Shun Yu cites his parents as justification for wanting to give up and simply return to his hometown, but Lisa can see right through him. In the end, he drops his pretense and declares that he has fallen for Shang Zhou. Although the secretaries may be understanding, not everyone will, especially the mother of the latter. He then hands her the notebook they gave him when he first started working there, along with some additional notes he wrote, and asks her to keep their talk private.

Before leaving for home, Lisa reports to an irritable Shang Zhou and announces Shun Yu’s plan to resign. She also gives him Shun Yu’s employment contract, which he requested previously. After Lisa leaves the room, Shang Zhou examines the contract and thinks back to the conversation he overheard between Lisa, Sofia, and Shun Yu in the villa just after he had gone to get some water. He recalled Shun Yu making light of the fact that he needed money to provide for his parents’ betterment. Shang Zhou carries the employment contract back to Lisa’s desk before leaving for home when he notices the notebook containing Shun Yu’s notes about him. A picture that was taken during the party for Shun Yu had slipped out as he turned the pages. He finds Shun Yu’s letter to the notebook’s new owner, in which he fondly describes Shang Zhou’s likes and dislikes. Additionally, he thoughtfully noted that despite what people may say about Shang Zhou, he is truly the best employer ever, and he kindly asked that the next secretary take good care of him. As he imagines Shun Yu writing all the notes, Shang Zhou breaks down in front of the empty table as he realizes that the latter has always intended to leave.

Writer’s Thoughts

Despite our expectations for the drama to come, both actors still left us amazed with how they did a fantastic job of conveying the emotions, and we couldn’t help but cry. Shang Zhou could feel abandoned, but Shun Yu’s concerns are equally reasonable given that we have known him from the beginning to be a good child who only wants to provide for his parents and that his boss was never intended to be a prospective love interest. It will be interesting to watch how Shang Zhou responds to Shun Yu’s tacit denial. Will he calmly accept it or, acting like the shrewd businessman that he is, attempt to adjust his plans to ensure that his cherished secretary remains? Let’s find out together in the second-to-last episode of ‘You Are Mine’, which will air on GagaOOLala on November 3.
