After Yi Ping leaves, his secretary, Holi, gets inside the office and notices Ever 9 playing some cards on the table to kill time. Holi sees Ever 9 as dumb and wonders what the probable nature of his relationship with Yi Ping is. Holi approaches Ever 9 to make small talk with him and starts to question him arrogantly, despite the latter being polite. She also tells Ever 9 that her relationship with Yi Ping is something that is not easy to explain. She shows off her pictures with Yi Ping stored on her phone and asks Ever 9 if he also has pictures with him. The question dampens Ever 9’s mood as he realizes that he doesn’t have pictures with Yi Ping at all. Yi Ping then arrives and asks Holi to mind her own business. After finding out from Holi that Yi Ping doesn’t like it when people mess around his table, Ever 9 immediately apologizes and starts to tidy it up, but Yi Ping assures him that he is an exception. Noticing Ever 9’s down mood, Yi Ping asks him what is wrong and what he wants to do at the moment. Ever 9 answers that he wants to take photographs of the two of them, to which Yi Ping excitedly agrees and brings out his phone to use. The two started taking photographs together with fond smiles on each other’s faces and only stopped when Ever 9 was satisfied. Observing the intimate circle between the two, Holi tries to get in their bubble but is dismissed nonchalantly by Yi Ping, who then tells Ever 9 that they can now go. As the two walk around and discuss liking life in general, Ever 9 shares that it doesn’t really matter if he likes life as his entire being is just made of a database with various settings; hence, he is actually jealous of Yi Ping for being an actual human. He longs to have dreams and aspirations, prompting Yi Ping to ask if he has something on his mind to do when he reaches eighty years old. Ever 9 answers that he feels lucky to have met Yi Ping and thinks that it would be nice if they could stay by each other’s sides even when the latter gets old. However, Ever 9 realizes that how he looks will not age at all, and it will be awkward for people to look at him. He also understands that changing his appearance with Yi Ping’s growing age may cost them a fortune. Sensing that Ever 9 is beginning to succumb to worry, Yi Ping asks him if he has a wish that he can fulfill, although the former says that he wishes to make his wishes come true instead. Ever 9 tells Yi Ping that he wants to go to a riverbank.
Ever 9 and Yi Ping find a riverbank where they see couples being attached, prompting Ever 9 to ask out loud why couples would want to walk around there despite the smelly water and the mosquitoes all over. Yi Ping answers that he might just be asking that due to his non-existent actual dating experience. He offers his hand for Ever 9 to hold the grapes on it correctly, intertwining their fingers together as a reward for taking care of him. The two walk around with their hands dangling in the distance between them. A few days later, Ever 9 prints the photographs they took together and starts to put them all over the house, along with notes with doodles of the two of them that he drew for Yi Ping. He then keeps one of the photographs in the same box where he kept the notes where they played games before. Ever 9 thinks that writing notes is more human and comments that seeing Yi Ping smile is like seeing the sunshine. Meanwhile, Yi Ping wonders just what goes on in Ever 9’s mind.
Writer’s Thoughts:
We are officially halfway through the series, and the line between Ever 9’s is set up thanks to Uncle Wei, and the seemingly human emotions that he has started to feel after appreciating Yi Ping’s kindness continue to overlap with each other and confuse the both of them. While Yi Ping is set on keeping Ever 9, the question of the repercussions of such action in the present and the future begins to arise as well. Is there a future for humans and robots that is intended to separate in the first place? Be sure to catch the new episodes of ‘AntiReset’ every Friday on GagaOOLala.
