Episode 5
Yi Ping cannot sleep that night following his “kissing tutorial” with Ever 9 and finds himself repeatedly returning to his memories. To his surprise, Ever 9 sneaks into his room and lies beside him while he pretends to sleep. As he feels the weight of Ever 9’s stare on him, Yi Ping opens his eyes and meets the latter’s. He convinces himself that what happened earlier that day is just another teaching session, but miserably fails as he can’t help but touch Every 9’s lips. The two get under the cover to talk before going to sleep, where Yi Ping admits that he is not used to chatting or talking with someone else, to which Ever 9 agrees. Ever 9 starts mentioning all the things that Uncle Wei has told him about Yi Ping, such as being a person who insists on doing everything by himself and how he doesn’t seem to like people to be close to him. Uncle Wei is determined to prove that with Ever 9, everything will be resolved for emotionally unattached people like his nephew. Yi Ping realizes that Ever 9 remembered every single thing due to his large memory capacity and asks what will happen once someone shuts him down or restarts him. Ever 9 responds that, at the end of the day, he is just a powerful computer that, once broken down, might need a reset or a reboot to function again. His software composition may have to be reinstalled, or his hardware might have to be sent to the laboratory for repairs. Ever 9 asks Yi Ping if he minds that he is a robot, but just like before, the latter assures him that he doesn’t mind at all. That night, Yi Ping has a nightmare wherein Ever 9 suddenly shuts down in his very own arms.
The following day, Yi Ping is bothered by his nightmare, which affects his interaction with Ever 9, who is on the side and waiting for an opportunity to assist him. The two-part ways awkwardly, with Yi Ping not asking Ever 9 to go to school with him as he has promised before. His students notice that he seems to be in a bad mood, and they also observe that Ever 9 did not sit in their class that day. A pair of students make fun of Ever 9 and comment that he looks dumb without knowing that Yi Ping is just behind them. Yi Ping persuades himself that factors that don’t matter should be removed as soon as possible. On his way out, he calls Uncle Wei and invites him for dinner, catching the latter off guard as it is the first time that his nephew has initiated something. Uncle Wei promises to book an expensive restaurant for the two of them; meanwhile, Yi Ping drafts a message to Ever 9 informing him that he will go home late but ends up not sending it. On the other hand, Ever 9 spent the day waiting for Yi Ping to come back until late that evening.
During their dinner, Yi Ping questions Uncle Wei about his intent in creating the Heng Ren series, to which the latter answers that each series is designed with its features. In the case of Ever 9, it is designed to hopefully be a treatment for emotional disorders, primarily focusing on emotional care, where it will respond to the owner or be used based on its input data. Uncle Wei deduces from Yi Ping’s behavior that their data analysis and responses yield a positive result. Aside from the minor bugs, other owners of the series are also satisfied with their robots, but none of them are like Yi Ping, who is concerned about what would happen if the robots were to be recalled if they became damaged. Uncle Wei tells Yi Ping that if the robot acquires minor damage, a simple reset might fix it; however, if the damage is too severe, the robot will be fully replaced, garnering a violent reaction from the latter. Noticing the impact of Ever 9 on Yi Ping, Uncle Wei reminds him to consider Ever 9 as just a delicate premium computer that he can see as a friend, although he points out that it is still not a human.
