Hollywood Producers Eye Legal Action Against Joaquin Phoenix For Quitting Todd Haynes Gay Film

Joaquin Phoenix

It seems like karma is about to bite someone in the butt.

Hollywood producers have reportedly been eyeing legal action against ’Joker’ star Joaquin Phoenix for exiting Todd Haynes’ explicit gay film.

Earlier this week, the 49-year-old actor was announced to have quit the film due to getting “cold feet” despite writing the screenplay for the gay love story with Haynes and Jon Raymond. Phoenix left the film five days before filming started despite having sets already finished in Guadalajara where the filming was supposed to occur.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that producers are reportedly seeking to sue the actor with sources citing examples of actors being held accountable for leaving films without its stars throughout Hollywood history such as Kim Basinger in 1993 for the movie ‘Boxing Helena’ and Bruce Willis for the unfinished Disney film ‘Broadway Brawler.’

Phoenix is no stranger to leaving production for several projects due to cold feet as reports say that he threatened to leave Ridley Scott’s 2023 historical film ‘Napoleon’ unless director Paul Thomas Anderson was hired to do rewrites. The studio gave in and Phoenix finished the movie which eventually received mixed reviews from critics for its historical inaccuracies.

Some producers have allegedly talked about blacklisting the actor, casting shadows on his upcoming ‘Joker’ sequel but it is deemed unlikely given the predicted success of the film with Lady Gaga. Sources also claim that Phoenix will most likely get out of this tricky predicament unscathed and predict the actor will settle the issue financially and quietly.
