‘Unnamed’: A Story About Discovering Oneself

What if you feel that your name doesn’t accurately represent who you really are and that you’re uncertain about your own sexuality? Will you make changes to discover the true you?

Unnamed,” an award-winning Taiwanese short film starring Chang Chun Yu and Gao Hong, was selected for and won numerous awards in 2020, including the Taiwan Queer International Film Festival. The story depicts Zhang Ya-Ting, a girl whose name translates to “gracious and beautiful,” who feels that her name is too feminine. She asks Hong Jia-Hao, a boy who happens to be her best friend, for help. Her visit breaks up Hong’s unplanned sexual encounter with a man he met online. Hao responds by disclosing Ya-Ting’s previous lesbian tendencies. On the rooftop, these two troubled individuals dispute once more about love and self-identity.

The film opens with Ya Ting’s father teaching him how to drive. They went to a columbarium, where the remains of her grandfather rested. His father talks to his late dad like he is still alive and gives him updates about Ya Ting. He was telling him how bad she was at driving when she suddenly said that she wanted to change her name because it was too girly for her. Her father was surprised but ignored her, but she continued talking and asked his grandpa if he agreed to her changing her name, he should give her three yeses. She tossed three coins, but her father picked them up.

Her father apologizes and says that the old man should just ignore her, as her name matches the fortune-telling table and can help her find a good husband. She was distraught, so he left his father at the columbarium and walked away. Jia Hao was lying half-naked on his bed when Ya Ting knocked on his window. The girl immediately took off her clothes and took a shower in his bathroom. She asked him to go with her when she changed her name, but the other person refused as he would meet someone that day. Ya Ting tried to persuade him, so he promised to go with her the next day.

He was so upset when he found blood on his sheets when the girl stood up, as she was having her time of the month. Jiang Ho advises her to stay in the bathroom because his visitor is on his way. Ya Ting looked at herself in the mirror and started to touch her body. She was on the verge of climax when suddenly, Jiang Ho knocked on the door. She was shocked when her friend entered the bathroom naked and asked for her help. The latter says he can’t have sex with his visitor, but he doesn’t know what to do. She tells him to just ask him to leave, but Jiang Ho is scared, so she helps her friend.

Jiang Ho went outside again, and the other guy started kissing him again. On the other hand, Ya Ting is making weird noises inside the bathroom to distract the guy. Jiang Ho couldn’t take it anymore, so he told the guy that they should stop because he thought his cat was very sick and needed to be brought to the doctor. Ya Ting teases him as soon as the guy walks away. She took a photo of herself as she got ready to change her name. Jiang Ho asks her if her father ever thought of changing his name, and she says never because the fortune teller says that her father lacks water element, so they choose the name ‘Chun’ for him to have a harmonious family.

They went to a restaurant to eat dessert when the guy Jiang Ho met earlier called. Ya Ting’s father also called her, and Jiang Ho played naughty when he answered both calls and the two men on the line went into confusion. The two friends laughed as her father got angry when, unexpectedly, Jiang Ho spilled to her father that she likes girls. She was shocked and upset, so she walked away. She was very upset, so she went to her hideout and sprayed the wall to vent her anger. That night, Jiang Ho was surprised when Ya Ting crashed into his place again. He was washing his clothes on the rooftop when Ya Ting confronted him about her sexuality.

He says he saw her kissing another girl; that’s why he thought she liked girls. Their confrontation continues, and Ya Ting calls him gross for hooking up with a random guy. Jiang Ho didn’t mind her and continued washing his clothes. She was surprised when she saw that he even washed her underwear. At that moment, she smiled and realized that Jiang Ho was her best friend. They finished the laundry and played a little after cleaning up. They reconciled, and Ya Ting slept at his place that night. The next day, Jiang Ho wakes up early to get his laundry. Ya Ting was still sleeping, so he woke her up and said that her father was waiting downstairs.

He fixed her uniform and sent her off. Ya Ting’s father said hi to him, and he told him to get breakfast before going to school. They arrived at the parking space, and a moment later, her father gave her a paper and said that he got some names from the fortune teller. Because if she wants to change her name, it has to match her fortune-telling table, and it will also be good for her future spouse. They exchanged seats as it was another day of driving lessons for Ya Ting. Her father asked her if Jiang Hao had a girlfriend, and she said that he shouldn’t give his name to the fortune teller. He also advised him to check the names, and some of them were not too girly. The short film ends with Ya Ting still struggling to park the car but continuously learning until she hits the spot.

There are aspects of ourselves that we find uncomfortable or believe to be different from who we are. There are moments when we feel that our names don’t really reflect who we really are or how we live. “Unnamed” highlighted to us that confusion can occasionally arise when attempting to discover who we really are. We will also experience disappointment, anger, and fear along the way. Still, the people we care about will support us no matter what while we search for our real selves.
