Feeling the Weight of a Wave of Feelings in ‘At 2500, In Akasaka’ Episode 3

Does Shirasaki now understand what his true feelings are for Asami? Let’s find out in Episode 3 of ‘At 2500, In Akasaka‘.

Shirasaki has been having a hard time with one of his lines in their drama, which is saying the word “I like you”. It’s not that he can’t say it, but he does not seem to capture the feeling fully well, which also disappointed the director. Asami tried to comfort him during the scene, and when it seemed that the final cut was okay, Shirasaki begged the crew if they can re-do the scene again. However, because Asami has another schedule to go to, the scene couldn’t be re-shot so the crew decided to resume filming the next day. Back at their shared van, Shirasaki once again apologized to Asami for not being able to give his all, but Asami only said that they can recalibrate his feelings tomorrow, before rushing off to his next schedule.

Shirasaki felt miserable as he walked towards his house, rethinking of all the ways he could have done better. He received a message from his manager saying that today was the first day of their drama airing, but he couldn’t feel excited about it. Just as he was going to drown in misery, he heard someone ring his doorbell. Perplexed, he sees Asami in his doorway, greeting him. Asami asked him if he already ate, and Shirasaki said he hasn’t eaten yet. Asami, then, declares that he will cook curry so he should hurry up and shower before they miss the time of their drama airing.

Asami expertly sliced and diced ingredients to prepare for their dinner. As soon as Shirasaki finishes his shower, Asami touches his hair and asked him if he can do him a favor, and it turns out that he only wanted to blowdry Shirasaki’s hair because it reminded him a lot of his dog back at home. Shirasaki looked at him weirdly but realized that he liked the feeling of being taken care of.

The two set the table and ate Asami’s curry together, with Shirasaki praising it, saying it was even better than a restaurant’s. Shirasaki, sitting at a stool because he does not have another chair since he barely has anyone over, was asked by Asami if he can sleep over after watching their drama together. The two finally watched their series together, and Shirasaki was being too hard on himself regarding his acting skills. Asami definitely noticed it, and in an effort to make Shirasaki feel better, he pulled Shirasaki along with him as they were lying in bed together. Shirasaki asked if he was once again thinking of him as his dog, but Asami said that he smells him a lot. He also asked him about things that he likes, to which Shirasaki answered a lot of things. Among the things he mentioned that he liked was Asami’s curry, which he said he was grateful for. And another is the view near his apartment. Asami points out that Shirasaki seems to like so many things, and even if it’s not the same as falling in love, the feeling is almost there. Shirasaki confesses to the sleeping Asami that he never had the experience of confessing to someone, which is probably the reason why he couldn’t say the line as genuinely as possible. Asami wasn’t able to reply anymore because he was so sleepy. Asami fell asleep, and Shirasaki turned to his face, with his heart beating loud, lulling him to sleep.

The next morning, the two pass by Shirasaki’s favorite spot which showcases a nice view. There, Shirasaki tells Asami that he will work hard to become a good actor. The two share a moment looking at the view before going to their filming site.

At the filming site, Shirasaki was still nervous about the scene where he has to confess to Asami. Upon seeing how nervous he looks, Asami reaches his hand out to touch Shirasaki’s hand to give him encouragement. While walking to the filming area, Shirasaki thought of all the things he likes, like cinema, acting, strawberry shortcake, but most of all, all of the things that Asami shared with him. The curry he cooked, the way he touched his hair, his childlike face when sleeping… and just Asami. Finally, during the confession scene which he could not do yesterday, Shirasaki, with tears in his eyes, finally said the line “I like you” to Asami genuinely. Is it because he truly likes Asami? Or is it just because he thought of all the things he liked prior to filming? Let’s find out in the next episode of ‘At 2500, In Akasaka’.

Writer’s thoughts:

The series is definitely leaning towards a more nuanced approach to the story. Shirasaki shows his vulnerability and insecurity towards his acting and he only had the courage to show it all to Asami. Through it all, Asami has helped him along the way, and Shirasaki is seeing how his co-actor, who is now his friend, has been taking care of him. It does seem like romantic feelings are finally rising, and Shirasaki seems overwhelmed. But what will he do with these new feelings? Will he finally confess to Asami or will he just ignore these new feelings until the end of their filming?
