Episode 6: An Acquaintance or a Misunderstanding

Just as Jiang Chi urges Bu Xia to “officialize” things, two students from the school newsletter show up and ask me to interview them about their pictures going viral on the school forum. Bu Xia attempts to change the subject by saying that they are only friends, but his compliments on Jiang Chi’s character convey a different message, and the latter interrupts him by saying that they are living together. Jiang Chi, in the meantime, excitedly declares that he has joined the basketball team for Bu Xia. He also mentions liking someone despite not having good first impressions of them. Bu Xia asks Jiang Chi, in frustration, why he said such words after the two students eventually left, but Jiang Chi responds that he truly meant everything he said.

In his dream, Bu Xia makes out with Jiang Chi, and as he awakens, he is reminded of their conversation from the previous evening, in which his roommate tells him to consider the reasons behind his kisses. When Jiang Chi shows up for basketball practice in the gym, their Captain informs Bu Xia that the law student will always be paired with him and that he is also in charge of washing his jersey. Bu Xia is forced to agree because he is aware that Jiang Chi is not very open to having other people touch him or his belongings. The basketball teams couldn’t help but observe the two’s excellent teamwork and ease with which they could share a bottle of water.

After doing Jiang Chi’s laundry, the two hang out on the rooftop to dry their clothes. Bu Xia asks Jiang Chi why he chose jersey number 11 but gets flustered when Jiang Chi answers that it is because the former likes Slam Dunk, and he’s the only one who can be jersey number 11 to Bu Xia’s jersey number 10. When a towel accidentally flies over Bu Xia’s face, Jiang Chi takes the chance to kiss the former, who for some reason could not find himself not responding to the kiss. The two make out heavily, just like in Bu Xia’s dream. Later that evening, when Bu Xia finally sees the photos in the school forum with new eyes, he starts to ask himself why he let Jiang Chi kiss him and why he responded. He starts a dialogue with the jersey keychains given to him by Jiang Chi on the true intention behind kissing but is unable to settle on an answer.

The team questions Bu Xia about his true relationship with his roommate the following day during basketball practice as they wait for Jiang Chi’s arrival. He tries to explain that nothing romantic is going on and they’re just male friends living together, but his teammates insist that the pictures posted in the school forum scream something else. They even said that gender has nothing to do with love, and Jiang Chi is nice only to him. Bu Xia claims that they coerced him into adding the law student to the team and even says, “How can he even give time to Jiang Chi when he doesn’t even have time for himself?”. The team interprets it as Bu Xia sacrificing himself by being nice to his roommate just to recruit him. They then noticed that Jiang Chi had arrived and heard their conversation who walks away without saying a word.

Bu Xia looks for his roommate, but his messages get ignored. He finds Jiang Chi in the school building and realizes that the law student has no intention of talking to him. Jiang Chi became more enraged when Bu Xia told him not to be angry and questioned why he couldn’t be angry considering that it was clear that Bu Xia merely treated him well in order to win his team over. Although he confesses that it was his objective initially, the anthropology student tries to clarify that he simply said it so that the team wouldn’t have the wrong image of them.

Jiang Chi sarcastically apologizes to Bu Xia for his “sacrifices”. When Bu Xia explains that he does feel comfortable with him, Jiang Chi finally releases all his frustration and asks the former to be true to him instead of leaving him hanging around. The law student admits that he has feelings for his roommate and kisses him to prove a point when the latter says that he thought they were just joking around. Bu Xia is only able to release himself from Jiang Chi’s kiss when he wounds the latter’s lip. The law student pulls him closer again and tells him that he never jokes around. Jiang Chi asks him again if his feelings are reciprocated, but does not get an answer. The law student releases Bu Xia and apologizes for misreading his actions. He tells him that he’ll say nothing is going on between the two of them should someone ask him again and leaves.

Writer’s Thoughts:

The boy who can hear the ghosts’ whispers finally understands Jiang Chi’s genuine motivation. Now it’s Bu Xia’s turn to consider what he feels as well; is it simply just the silence from the undesirable noises that he wants in his roommate’s company, or might there be something else that makes his pulse beat faster when the other is present? While the two’s romance is undeniably a sight to behold, we’re looking forward to seeing if Bu Xia’s sister has finally discovered a solution to her brother’s dilemma. Stay tuned for next week’s episode 7 of ‘Stay By My Side’ airing on August 11!
