Bu Xia is able to stay away from the ghost’s voices thanks to Jiang Chi’s continual presence and time spent with him, but what will happen if the two have to separate in the meantime? Let’s all find out what happens to our boys of misinterpretations in ‘Stay By My Side’ EP 5!

Episode 5: Because it’s you, I chose you.

While still looking for a solution, Bu Xia’s sister urges him to rely on his roommate’s yang and presence in the interim to silence the voices of ghosts. Unfortunately, Jiang Chi’s father is admitted to the hospital, forcing the law student to leave the dormitory. Bu Xia attempts to silence the disturbing sounds by resting on Jiang Chi’s bed in the vain hope that there may be remnants of his yang there, but the haunted noises continue, causing him constant exhaustion and insomnia. While some spirits are kind to ask the others to stop pestering the youngster, some are still insistent on their own personal wants they wish they could receive aid with. Bu Xia tries to beg the ghosts to let him sleep, even for a brief period of time. When they video chat, Jiang Chi observes his roommate’s dark circles and worries. Bu Xia reassures him that Jiang Chi is okay and advises the law student to take his time taking care of his family despite his desire for Jiang Chi to return sooner so he can receive energy from him.

As the days go by, the spirits keep taunting and torturing Bu Xia with their voices since they know that he can hear them now that Jiang Chi is gone, and it is uncommon for them to find someone who can hear them. When Jiang Chi returns, he discovers that his roommate is actually dozing out in the common area of the dormitory. The voice silencer’s return has infuriated the ghosts in the meantime. The law student tucks Bu Xia into his jacket, which wakes him up. Bu Xia immediately hugs Jiang Chi to seek comfort from the unwanted voices as he welcomes him back and praises him for being home when the latter suddenly kisses him, catching him by surprise. Jiang Chi is surprised when Bu Xia pushes him and thinks that the latter is just shy. He tells Bu Xia that they are both boys and are looking to each other for energy. As soon as Bu Xia realizes that this can also serve as his excuse, he drags Jiang Chi back to their room, where they end up sharing the law student’s bed.

The following morning, Bu Xia sneaks outdoors to participate in basketball practice after getting a good night’s sleep. Jiang Chi follows soon after and is excitedly thanked by the basketball team for finally joining when he tells them to thank Bu Xia instead, as he is his sole reason for doing so. He also reminds them of his conditions for joining, which are that jersey no. 11 must be his, that he and Bu Xia cannot be separated during practice sets, and that his jersey towels must be washed by his roommate personally. When the two get the chance to talk, Jiang Chi tells him that coming to the practice is a reward for the energy supplement given to him, pertaining to their kiss. Bu Xia immediately covers Jiang Chi’s mouth when the latter almost shares it with the team. Due to Jiang Chi’s persuasion, the two get ready to cook when they return to the dormitory pantry. Bu Xia grumbles that they could just order meals, but Jiang Chi complains to him that he only treated him nicely when he was persuading him to join the basketball team and that he is now revealing his true colors. The anthropology student argues that he can do something that he is good at instead. As the law student draws nearer, Bu Xia He is then reminded of their kiss and feels flushed. Jiang Chi then hugs him from behind as his ears turn red. He tries to move away from Jiang Chi and answers that he is different from his teammates when the latter asks why he doesn’t want them physically close to each other. Jiang Chi continues to prod him with what he means when he says he’s different from the rest of the team. Unable to answer, he runs away, making the latter chuckle.

When Bu Xia later discovers their pictures posted in the school forum, he is horrified and asks Jiang Chi if he is aware of it. Jiang Chi informs him enthusiastically that there are people shipping them and expresses surprise that the anthropology student has not seen it before. Jiang Chi’s acts, according to Bu Xia, are to blame because they generated a malicious impression of them. He also suggests that they issue a statement, but Jiang Chi interprets this to mean that Bu Xia wants them to be official instead. As an ecstatic Jiang Chi looks at him, Bu Xia muses to himself about what they should make official.

Writer’s Thoughts:

We are finally halfway through the series and yet it seems like our about-to-be couple’s relationship is still full of miscommunications despite them being closer than ever. Meanwhile, Bu Xia’s sister is still struggling to find solutions on how to help his brother. Will they actually find one or will our boy who hears the voices of the ghosts forever rely on his roommate?
