Episode 9: I like it because it feels safe.

Shun Yu refuses to speak with Shang Zhou after the latter follows him home and confronts him about leaving during the company trip. Shang Zhou asks him why he quit, getting tired of his constant avoidance. Shun Yu does not respond to the question; instead, he simply says that others are better than him, to which Shang Zhou disagrees, saying that he is the one he wants. Shun Yu is adamant about leaving, and when he tries to open the door, Shang Zhou grabs him back and pulls up the employment contract he previously signed. Shang Zhou informs him that he must stay for a full year after signing and that, should he fail to do so, he will be required to pay several months’ salary. Shun Yu leaves Shang Zhou at the door without saying anything after realizing that the latter is determined to prevent him from leaving. Despite her sympathy for Shun Yu, Lisa makes an effort to clarify that Shang Zhou is doing impulsive things with him because he genuinely cares for him. Shun Yu begs her to persuade Shang Zhou to release him by speaking with Vice President Lee. To his shock, Lisa tells her that Vice President Lee has already made an attempt to help him but ended up fighting with him. Shang Zhou maintains that if abruptly altering Shun Yu’s contract terms is the only way to keep him around, he will do it, even though Vice President Lee makes sense in saying that the world does not revolve around him. If Shang Zhou won’t let Shun Yu go, Lisa advises him to create things that will make him want to leave instead.

Meanwhile, Shun Yu continues to be Shang Zhou’s secretary but remains unmoved by his advances, such as bringing him breakfast as before or requesting massages. He tells Shang Zhou up front that he will no longer perform any duties as a secretary that do not fall under his job description or that will cost him extra. When money is brought up, a displeased Shang Zhou pulls Shun Yu up against him and demands to know how much he needs to pay for all the things or touches he will allow him. Shang Zhou walks out of the room after realizing Shun Yu remains unaffected by him all. Later that day, Shun Yu runs into Vice President Lee and tries to act like nothing is unusual, but the latter sees right through him and invites him to talk. Vice President Lee begins to ask about his circumstances with Shang Zhou and comments that he is a difficult person to get along with. To his surprise, Shun Yu still defends him despite his initial complaint that they probably upset each other. Vice President Lee reveals that Shang Zhou changed Shu Yu’s contract from the one he had previously signed in an attempt to force him to stay. Vice President Lee questions Shun Yu about why he believes someone will do that when he asks why Shang Zhou would do it. He then explains to Shun Yu that Shang Zhou was not taught how to express what he truly meant because he was raised by a strict mother who expected him to be the best. Shun Yu understands that Shang Zhou may be struggling to communicate his true feelings for him and isn’t joking around as much as he initially believed during their drunken encounter. Vice President Lee advises him to talk to Shang Zhou, as he knows that the latter is not someone who would go above and beyond just to play around.

Following his conversation with Shun Yu, Vice President Lee visits Shang Zhou to inform him that his mother has been asking about his romantic status lately and that he will be visiting Japan for one of their business dealings. In addition, he informs him that he told Shun Yu about the altered contract. Knowing that making Shun Yu stay makes him unhappy, Shang Zhou promises that he will take care of it. The next day, Shang Zhou notifies Shun Yu that he has accepted his resignation and that, since he already knows what he did with the contract, he can leave whenever he pleases. Shun Yu asks Shang Zhou, whom he followed, why he did that for him. Since Shun Yu perceives Shang Zhou that way, he lies and claims that he did it for fun. He tells the distraught Shun Yu that he is now going to be free before leaving.

Later that night, Shun Yu realizes that Shang Zhou has once again done things for him to show his true feelings; even though he is now free, he feels unhappy. His gaze flits about his home, recalling all the times they had spent there. Shang Zhou has always loved and cared for him, he realizes, but he has ignored it because of his cowardice. He bolts from his apartment and heads to Shang Zhou’s house, only to find that no one answers. Then he calls Lisa, who tells him that Shang Zhou went to Japan instead of Vice President Lee as originally planned and will be back the following week. Shun Yu breaks down and sobs in front of Shang Zhou’s quiet house. Rather than returning home, he finds himself in a restaurant run by a dashing young man named Gu, who sits with him while he drowns his sorrows. Shun Yu confides in Gu about his issues with love and asks him if he believes that real love can exist between two men. To his surprise, Gu asks him if he believes that real love is only questionable when it involves two men, rather than responding to him.

When Shang Zhou returns next week, Shun Yu questions him again, asking why, of all people, he fell in love with him when he’s less of a person. Shang Zhou responds that he had never felt more secure in being himself than he did when he was around him. He understands that he can be open, vulnerable, and simply be himself with Shun Yu. After listening to Shang Zhou’s heartfelt words, Shun Yu says he now understands.

Writer’s Thoughts:

Finally, finally! Now, the president and his secretary are on the same page. Shun Yu’s employment contract was changed by Shang Zhou, which is extremely cruel, but it is clear that he did it out of desperation to keep a relationship with him at all. Meanwhile, we have to thank Vice President Lee once more for helping Shun Yu realize that Shang Zhou has always been sincere about him. And of course, our cameo, Gu from the upcoming VIDol third installment, VIP Only, also helped Shun Yu realize that true love isn’t about gender but rather about the genuine feelings that two people have for one another. See how the tyrannical cat-like president and his naive mouse-like secretary’s relationship ends in the upcoming “You Are Mine” episode!
