Following a repair after he shuts down due to receiving love which turns out to be against the nature of his settings, Ever 9 is reminded by Uncle Wei himself that he must soon part ways with Yi Ping, and his reset is coming sooner than expected. Meanwhile, Yi Ping is committed to having Ever 9 by his side at all costs, but is it possible to keep someone who refuses to stay? Let’s find out in BLTai’s recap of ‘AntiReset’ episode 9!

Episode 9
The next morning, after a night of making love, Ever 9 watches Yi Ping sleep peacefully as he tries to store every memory he can in his database. In the following days, the two return to their normal routine, and Yi Ping even hosts a semester gathering himself, which surprised everyone as they knew him to avoid crowds. His students also couldn’t help but think that he seemed happier again, especially with Ever 9 back in their class. During the semester gathering, Ever 9 and Yi Ping are inseparable the whole time, and they end up singing for everyone. Sometime later, as Yi Ping browses the photos that his colleagues sent him, where he and Ever 9 are visibly happy, the latter has started to remove their photos and love notes that he has previously posted on their fridge. Yi Ping also noticed that Ever 9 seemed to not be in the mood when they went to the aquarium for a date until they got home. While watching a futuristic movie, Ever 9 coldly comments that humans are weird as they exert a huge effort in technology and robots but also uses the concept for movies to scare them of what too much technology can do. Yi Ping tries to say that the robot troupe movies are meant to touch the hearts of the viewers, but Ever 9 just answers that he is just a robot and cannot feel sentimental like a human. Ever 9 further adds that soon he will also break like the Ship of Theseus. Yi Ping becomes concerned with how Ever 9 is going cold on him for no reason that he can recall and comforts him; however, he observes instead that Ever 9 has also stopped wearing the dog tag necklace that he gave him before. Ever 9 lies and says that he might have left it somewhere before he starts crossing out their date list in front of Yi Ping, who is now dumbfounded.
The following day, Yi Ping asks Ever 9 to come to school with him, but the latter refuses and becomes angry when the former brings it up again. Worried about how Ever 9 has been acting, Yi Ping goes to Uncle Wei to once again request that he keep Ever 9 with him. As usual, Uncle Wei reprimands him for thinking that Ever 9 is just a doll and dismisses his nephew’s request, especially on the feasibility of changing Ever 9’s appearance as he gets older. Yi Ping confesses that he wants to be with Ever 9 like any other human does when they fall in love, prompting Uncle Wei to remind him that Ever 9 was sent to him only to take care of his injury. He continues to rub salt in the wound by saying that everything Ever 9 did was by his settings, and if Yi Ping is really in love with him, then he should fall in love with the researcher who set him up instead. Uncle Wei tries to comfort Yi Ping but also gets blunt with him, saying that the reset is inevitable since the training is almost over.

Meanwhile, Ever 9 has decided that the time to leave has finally arrived and has run last-minute errands for Yi Ping in the meantime. He begins by taking off all their pictures together that are displayed around the house, despite also feeling hurt about it. He also cleans out the bathroom for his things and cooks for Yi Ping for the last time before he packs all of his belongings in his luggage. Lastly, he burns their photos together, as he wants to make sure that there will be no reminder to Yi Ping that Ever 9 once lived with him there. At the same time, Yi Ping finally arrives home and finds Ever 9 waiting for him in the living room with their contract in his hands. Ever 9 tells Yi Ping that they ended up not signing the contract they had talked about when he first came into his house. He admits that crossing the line so many times from the contract is the reason why he suddenly shut down or how some bugs developed in his system. He then continues that the researchers discovered that receiving love destroys the core of their system, and it will undoubtedly bring them more trouble in the future if they continue to stay together; hence, he requests that they stop. Yi Ping strongly refuses, but Ever 9 tells him that his refusal might backlash at the company and hinder other people from experiencing the Ever series. Regardless of his promises back then that he would never forget Yi Ping, Ever 9 admits that the reset will clear all his memories of him. Yi Ping threatens Ever 9 that he will tell everyone that he is a defective item if he leaves him and that he has broken his master as a last resort to keep him, but the latter answers that he doesn’t want him to see him falling apart in front of him. Desperate to keep Ever 9, Yi Ping apologizes and says that everything is his fault for falling in love with him in the first place, but Ever 9 says it’s not his fault. Ever 9 acknowledged that Yi Ping has given him so much love that he should be the one thankful to him for making him feel like he is human too. He promises Yi Ping in vain that while he may be reset, the memories will never be forgotten, and he asks him to remember him and their good time spent together. Yi Ping begs Ever 9 to not go, but Ever 9 tries to push him away.
A little later, Ever 9 wakes up and finds himself on the floor while Yi Ping sleeps soundly on the couch. He tries to get up, but he feels his vision blurring until he finally loses consciousness. His last thought is that he should trust Yi Ping to return to his normal life after him.
Writer’s Thoughts:
We suppose that sometimes love is insufficient to keep a relationship going and grow old together, just like in real life. In Yi Ping and Ever 9’s case, it is definitely because it is abnormal for a human and a robot to become romantically involved when the robot’s role is to take care of him as intended. Though that will probably just be us being hopeless romantics, we do hope that Uncle Wei will take some action to help his nephew, or at the very least, play the “he’s a human disguised as a robot” card.
