Episode 8
Ever 9 undergoes a thorough checkup after he shuts down on Yi Ping, where the laboratory researchers notice that his tolerance for love is remarkably low and sadness or anger least affects him. One of the researchers interprets it as Ever 9 malfunctioning due to receiving love when the purpose of his creation is to give love. Meanwhile, Ever 9 realizes that love can be painful for his well-being. The researchers collect Ever 9’s data and decide to send it immediately to Uncle Wei for his disposal. On the other hand, Yi Ping anxiously waits for Ever 9’s checkup in Uncle Wei’s office, where the latter tells him that the process can take a lot of time. Uncle Wei further adds that he can just send a new one to Yi Ping, who goes by the name Ever 7 since Ever 9 might already be due for a replacement. He continues that he didn’t imagine that his nephew could wreak havoc on his experiment, but Yi Ping refuses to get a new one and tells Uncle Wei to just inform him once the repair is done.
The following day, Yi Ping feels the silence of his home due to Ever 9’s absence and tries his best to prepare for work as normally as he can. Before leaving his house, he notices the plants that Ever 9 takes care of and waters them that day. On his way to work, he sees an old couple walking hand in hand and remembers his conversation with Ever 9 about growing old together. He also remembers Ever 9’s promise that he would always be the only person in his heart. Yi Ping couldn’t help but think that while there’s a saying that it takes twenty-one days to form a habit, Ever 9 has already become a part of his life, even if it hasn’t been twenty-one days since he met him. Ever 9’s absence is also noticed by Yi Ping’s class, who asks him where the former is and becomes disappointed when the latter simply answers that something comes up. Throughout the class, Yi Ping feels like he sees glimpses of Ever 9 sitting in one of the chairs and diligently listening to his lessons. The class didn’t just notice the difference the Ever 9 brings to the class but also how Yi Ping seems to look lonelier than usual. In his office, Yi Ping sees Ever 9 playing cards the same way he saw him last time: the latter got jealous of Holi; however, it turns out to be just his imagination, and so the other times that he thought he saw him tending to him. When he reaches home, the quietness of the house welcomes him once again, and he ends up curling up in the corner just like Ever 9 did the first time that they got separated. Yi Ping starts to count the number of hours that they have been apart and realizes how sad it is for someone to be on the waiting end. He spends the whole night playing the paper game that Ever 9 is so fond of after he cooks himself a healthy meal, as he knows that the latter will not like it if he returns to eating instant noodles. Before going to sleep, he messages Uncle Wei again and asks when Ever 9 will return home. Uncle Wei scuffs Yi Ping for using the word home for Ever 9 when he is just a robot.
