The Flavor of First Love Stays on the Tongue in ‘VIP Only’ Episode 6

Gu Jing unexpectedly kisses Liu Li after their first date, marking the beginning of his third book. As his heart begins to race for the man he hopes will change his perception of love as nothing more than heartache, his first love hints at a return and asks to see him once more. Can the bitter flavor of the first love be replaced by the sweetness of the new love? Let’s find out in BLTai’s recap of ‘VIP Only’ Episode 6.

Liu Li couldn’t resist stealing glances at Gu Jing, who always looked back at him before asking him to go somewhere, while he stayed in the restaurant writing. As it happens, Gu Jing is going to take him to the market to purchase fresh ingredients. The store owner remarks that, in contrast to his typical market run, Gu Jing did not purchase any scallions while he picked at some produce. Liu Li realizes that Gu Jing saw him set aside the scallions from earlier and tells the store owner that it is not someone’s favorite. He then tells Liu Li that when someone pays attention to even the smallest detail about someone, it indicates they truly like them. Liu Li, startled, writes it down in his notebook with excitement when Gu Jing asks him suddenly if he doesn’t want to learn about his preferences as well. When they return home, he looks through Liu Li’s notebook, which contains a list of observations Liu Li has made about him. Liu Li starts to worry that he didn’t ask his permission before doing it, but Gu Jing reassures him that he can do whatever he wants. Embarrassed, Liu Li looks away from him and focuses on the food in front of him, taking a picture of it to share on social media. The meal, a braised dish, took five hours to prepare. Gu Jing notes that to guarantee that the meat must first be marinated for quite some time for the flavor to stay on the tongue when eaten, While the two are enjoying their meal, Liu Li’s phone vibrates with a notification, which turns out to be a social media comment from Wu Shin asking Liu Li if he no longer likes steak. Liu Li decides not to respond and goes back to eating.

The once broken-hearted Shun Yu returns to the restaurant a few days later, this time bringing Shang Zhou along, and notices that Gu Jing appears to be glowing. Shun Yu comments that Gu Jing’s smile is the smile of someone in love, despite Da-ren’s opinion to the contrary. Meanwhile, Shang Zhou couldn’t help but complain that Shun Yu only took him out on a date to look at other handsome guys, to which he immediately explained that only Shang Zhou was the one for him. As the couple bickers, Da-ren asks Gu Jing if he really allowed himself to be used as a reference to Liu Li’s book, to which he says no and adds that he didn’t take advantage of that need.

Da-ren becomes even more suspicious of his boss when Gu Jing tells him that he will check on Liu Li, who turns out to be ill, resulting in Gu Jing taking care of him. Liu Li felt as though he was going to be kissed once more, just as Gu Jing reached to take his temperature. Before he gets up to make him another meal, Gu Jing teases him by saying that he seems to be getting used to his kisses. After Liu Li shares that asking Lai to look after him when he is ill is pointless as he is also someone who needs to be taken care of, Gu Jing tells him that he could depend on him from now on instead. Liu Li gives him a back hug and asks him what they are, as the latter is teaching and allowing him to learn about love. Gu Jing tells Liu Li, with a fond expression on his face, that he will answer him after he recovers. While he recuperates, Liu Li asks Tsai if she believes that being with someone when you’re at your lowest point and engaging in silly activities together can indicate that a person likes you. Tsai responds that it very well could be and advises him that romantic gestures rather than heartbreaks would make better material for his book. A few days later, Liu Li, who has recovered, visits the restaurant. He discovers that it is empty of patrons save for Da-ren, who is preparing a table for two with a romantic ambiance. He becomes excited when he notices an origami blue bird on the table and believes that Gu Jing will finally tell him what they are. He snapped a picture of the origami and shared it on social media once more. Gu Jing, who is about to return to the restaurant, is interrupted in the meantime by his mother, who is requesting money once more. She informs him that she must repay the money she borrowed from the underground bank. Although disappointed in his mother, Gu Jing promises to wire the money but pleads with her not to do it again. His mother leaves, and a moment later, a man in a suit enters and leaves their building. Returning to the restaurant, Liu Li looks forward to seeing Gu Jing as the door opens. He is shocked to see that the newcomer is Wu Shin, who sits down in front of him and informs him that he has been following him on social media, but he seems to be ignoring him. Although Liu Li responds that he is simply surprised to see his assistant again after how many years, Wu Shin remarks that Liu Li seems to have changed. He asks whether his two-year-old confession still holds and goes on to admit that he deliberately set out to find him. Liu Li’s eyes are met at that moment by Gu Jing, who has arrived with a handcrafted sculpture of the two of them as a gift. Wu Shin asks Liu Li if they can start over by holding his hand, much to his surprise. Gu Jing sets his gift on the counter and turns to leave, leaving Liu Li unable to respond to his first love.

Writer’s Thoughts:

Right before Gu Jing is about to confess, or so we think, Wu Shin finally appears. Even though we sense that Liu Li’s hesitancy suggests he might not feel the same way he did two years ago, we still can’t help but be anxious about what his answer will be. Speaking of appearances, this episode features a sweet cameo from our favorite President and Secretary, which brings back memories of the moment when Shun Yu was changed—not just by the noodles in Gu Jing’s restaurant, but also by his words—while he was still working out his feelings for Shang Zhou. This episode, in a sense, completes the circle since Shun Yu returns, only this time he brings the love of his life along.
