The Robot Attempts to Experience a Human Life in ‘AntiReset’ Episode 4

Yi Ping begins to feel comfortable living life with Ever 9, despite Uncle Wei’s constant reminder that the latter is just like a computer that will be broken and replaced in time. He also finds out that Ever 9 has a locked-in feature intended to meet the owner’s special needs, if any, and can’t seem to get it out of his mind. As Ever 9 continues to settle his place in Yi Ping’s life, an unexplainable feeling towards each other starts to grow. Find out what happens next in BLTai’s recap of ‘AntiReset’ Episode 4.

Episode 4

Yi Ping continues his peaceful life with Ever 9, who enjoys his time cooking for him and helping him prepare for work. He also thinks that living with someone feels nice and warms his heart. One day, Ever 9 prepares Yi Ping’s lunch bag but forgets to give him his work bag, prompting Yi Ping to return to the house to pick it up. He finds Ever 9 looking dejected after the latter realizes how lonely the house is when he is left alone. Yi Ping decides to bring Ever 9 with him, immediately putting a smile on his face.

As Ever 9 prepares to drive, he starts to ask Yi Ping about his experiences as a professor, such as handling his students, who may be troublesome at times but are still manageable in the end. While he is strict when it comes to his students, Yi Ping doesn’t flunk anyone, as he believes that everyone learns for themselves and not for grades. With the looming questions from Ever 9, Yi Ping asks him if he wants to join his class, to which the latter answers that while he has the default data of a school background, he hasn’t experienced being in one. Upon reaching the university, the two discuss how Ever 9 should address him outside. Ever 9 immediately calls him Master, as he believes that he is Yi Ping’s property, but Yi Ping reminds him that he is treating him as a human and not as property. To Yi Ping’s surprise, Ever 9 calls him “hubby” for husband, as he knows it to mean submitting his life to the other person. Thinking that Yi Ping is not satisfied with him, Ever 9 begins to list down all the endearments he can think of until he calls Yi Ping “my dear’, completely flustering him. In the end, Yi Ping tells Ever 9 that he can call him whatever he wants. Ever 9 excitedly follows Yi Ping to his classroom, where everyone stares at him as the new face in the group. Ever 9 takes the seat at the front and becomes entranced by how Yi Ping conducts his class. The students notice that Yi Ping seems to be focusing his attention on him and immediately approach him after the class. Xiao Jing, one of Yi Ping’s students and also the one who is the reason why he injured his arm, begins to question Ever 9’s presence in the class and if he is also interested in their handsome but cold professor. However, to everyone’s surprise, Ever 9 speaks just like Yi Ping and even defends his stoic attitude. After Ever 9 says no to all of Xiao Jing’s guesses on the nature of his relationship with Yi Ping, Xia Jing guesses that the two must have a romantic and secret relationship. The interrogation is interrupted when Yi Ping calls Ever 9 to come with him, announcing to everyone that he is a dear younger brother who will be staying with him for a few weeks and will be taking care of him. Looking at Ever 9 following Yi Ping like a puppy, Xiao Jing and her friends find him cute.

Yi Ping brings Ever 9 to a secluded area for the professors to have lunch with him, where the latter excitedly brings out the food that he cooked. Ever 9 proudly explains how he has observed that Yi Ping doesn’t like oily foods; hence, he steamed most of his meals. He also shows Yi Ping the notes that he took during class and explains how historical revisionism, as discussed, can redefine a new future. Yi Ping looks fondly at Ever 9 as he wonders if humans truly can create a new narrative from history. After lunch, he also tours Ever 9 around the university and tells stories of him when he was still studying. In the school park, where they can see most of the buildings, he points out where he has fond memories of, from when he was still a student until he started teaching. From where they stand is the lake that students have referred to as the Lake of Confessions, with the belief that people who confess their feelings mutually can stay together for a lifetime. Ever 9 assumes that Yi Ping must have received a lot of love in the past. The memories of all the confessions that he has received from when he was still a student until he became a professor flash through his mind, such as a woman thinking that her admiration of him for being a hard worker is enough to be in a relationship with him. Yi Ping also received a confession from a man in the past who thought that the call for lust could be a solid reason to get into a relationship with him. All of the confessions were turned down by Yi Ping, as he has always thought of a reason to rebut what they think was their intention in asking him out.

Noticing a sweet couple just beside them, Yi Ping tells Ever 9 that being in love from a neurological perspective rewards the brain with the release of various substances, such as dopamine, which makes them feel happy. Ever 9 asks Yi Ping if he has ever been in love, to which he answers that he has not. Ever 9 couldn’t help but ask Yi Ping why he does not when substances like dopamine can cause physical changes in the human body. He also asks out loud if his virtual concept of being in love matches the real experience, prompting Yi Ping to ask if he has a set-up and data of being in a relationship. Ever 9 refuses to answer, but Yi Ping continues to prod him and asks to what degree he is set up. Yi Ping makes Ever 9 stand in one of the polls and starts testing his reaction by coming close to him meter by meter and asking how he feels whenever he gets close. He also tells him that if he feels different each time they get closer, then his data of being in a relationship or love is pretty much close to reality. With just a few centimeters between them, Ever 9 closes the gap and kisses him. When their lips parted and Ever 9 started to analyze the difference between the data that was stored in him and his experience, Yi Ping kissed him again. Ever 9 wonders if this means there is a mutual understanding between the two of them.

In another flashback of when Ever 9 is being set up, one of the researchers asks why they must include dopamine in his setup, but the other researcher answers that they can only follow Uncle Wei’s instructions.

Writer’s Thoughts:

Can we just say that the tension between the two is probably over the roof with how they can’t seem to stop flirting with each other, although it may be unintentional on Ever 9’s side? It’s cute how Yi Ping tries his best to treat Ever 9 as human as possible and how he seems to immediately notice that Ever 9 looks sad after being left alone. If he ever takes Ever 9 to more of his classes, we hope he will also make friends and experience having humans around him who don’t hover around him just to input data or fix his settings. While Xiao Jing may have initially come off as annoying, she may come off as a nice character who hopefully will have a positive influence on Ever 9 as well. Meanwhile, Uncle Wei’s intention gets quite questionable as more flashbacks of when Ever 9 was being set up are brought up, but we hope he has good reasons behind it. Find out what happens next on the fifth episode of ‘AntiReset’ that will air this Friday, so be sure to stay tuned.
