Dysfunction Occurs Just As Feelings Finally Connect in ‘AntiReset’ Episode 7

Ever 9 experiences what he knows is jealousy after meeting Holi, and Yi Ping is quick to assure him that he is the one that matters to him. However, his imminent return to Uncle Wei once his training and data gathering are finished looms just around the corner. With the influx of different emotions and human experiences, will Ever 9 continue functioning as programmed? Let’s find out in BLTai’s recap of ‘AntiReset’ Episode 7.

Episode 7

Yi Ping creates a social media account after Ever 9 convinces him to do so, where he uploads the photos they took as his first post. He also named the accounts after them, Ping 9 and Ever 9. He then takes out Ever 9 on a date where the latter did his best to make himself presentable, which made the former happy with the thought that he was also excited about their plans. As Ever 9 turns on the car, he suddenly asks if Yi Ping may have the same feelings he has for him towards other Heng robot series, to which Yi Ping immediately answers that it’s only Ever 9 that matters. The assurance gives Ever 9 some comfort, and he expresses his gratitude to Yi Ping for owning him. The turn of conversation made Yi Ping ask Ever 9 if it’s possible that he will not be owned by someone else, although he stops midway from continuing his question. Ever 9 assures him that there isn’t going to be anyone else than him in his life. The two went to a zoo and took a lot of photos together to preserve their memories as Yi Ping knows that taking photos has a significant meaning to Ever 9. As they play with llamas in the zoo, Ever 9 remembers from his database that this kind of animal is considered a social animal, and living alone for an extended period can lead to depression, or worse, death. Ever 9 wishes that all llamas will find company someday and not ever feel alone. While resting under a shaded tree, Ever 9 comments that the llamas seem to have gotten used to the zoo even though they came from the other side of the globe, Yi Ping explains that the zoo has become the animals’ home. Ever 9 ends up comparing himself to a llama who has also found his home in Yi Ping. While Ever 9 is getting ice cream for the both of them, Yi Ping argues with Uncle Wei who reminds him that he must return Ever 9 soon over text messages. Uncle Wei praises Ever 9’s influence on Yi Ping but continues that the upcoming series of robots will even be better. Yi Ping cuts off Uncle Wei and insists on keeping Ever 9 with him.

Later that day, the two go to a pool to swim, where Yi Ping teases Ever 9 by asking him to help him take off his clothes. Ever 9 becomes flustered and pushes him away before walking back to the pool; however, he is continuously distracted by Yi Ping’s exposed physique and ends up having a daydream about it. Just when Ever 9 is about to touch Yi Ping’s bare torso, the latter moves back with a grin on his face before going for a swim. To Ever 9’s surprise, Holi arrives wearing a revealing swimsuit and instantly flocks into Yi Ping, prompting Ever 9 to get in between the two and cover Yi Ping from Holi’s advances. He also refuses to take Holi along with them for dinner and insists that she stay in the pool and make use of her swimsuit. That evening, Ever 9 remained sour about Holi’s existence despite Yi Ping’s explanations of his working relationship with her as his secretary, although he did tell him that he couldn’t terminate her employment as she had been recommended by his senior. Yi Ping further adds that he can’t do all the things that the main characters do in the movies to prove themselves or make their partners not jealous, prompting Ever 9 to say that he is also not like the robots in the movies, who have no feelings. Ever 9 apologizes to Yi Ping for being rude to Holi, although the latter says that he is thankful that he helped him get out of the situation as he has always been alone with no one to depend on during challenging entanglements. Ever 9 confesses that he thinks Holi and Yi Ping are a great match, and as someone designed to be a good companion, he thinks he is expected to set them up. However, Yi Ping tells him to remind himself that he is the one he is interested in, and he can’t just throw him to someone else he deems fit. Yi Ping gives Ever 9 a matching dog tag necklace with a carving of the number nine; he then promises to be the latter’s forever No. 9. After running his hands on his new necklace, Ever 9 kisses Yi Ping deeply. As they walk towards home, Yi Ping asks Ever 9 to return his promise of being each other’s No. 9, to which the latter excitedly agrees before embracing him tightly. As Yi Ping gently rubs Ever 9’s back, he feels him losing his grip on him and finds him losing consciousness in his arms.

Yi Ping brings Ever 9 to Uncle Wei’s laboratory, where the latter is immediately tended to by the researchers and developers. On the other side of the room, Yi Ping prays for a miracle to happen.

Writer’s Thoughts:

It looks like the happy days are about to get over as Ever 9 suddenly malfunctions! Will the unavoidable reset finally happen to save him and his program? And will Uncle Wei still give Ever 9 to Yi Ping if it happens, seeing that he is adamant that his nephew treat Ever 9 as just a highly customized computer? In a way, the abrupt malfunction might be a wake-up call to Yi Ping that Ever 9 at the end of the day is just a robot programmed to be his companion and not a real human that can return his romantic feelings.
