An Unexpected Twist Ends ‘Stay By My Side’ Episode 10

Bu Xia’s sister finally finds a solution to her brother’s problem, but it may come at the expense of Jiang Chi, while he is willing to bear the ability to hear ghost voices, will Bu Xia agree to pass it on to him? Let’s find out in the final episode of VIdol’s first BL installment, ‘Stay By My Side’ Episode 10.

Episode 10: Because of you, I’m not afraid anymore.

Bu Xia spends a movie night with his basketball teammates in his room while waiting for Jiang Chi to return from his part-time job after losing a bet in which the losers had to watch a horror film and share their reaction live on social media. Bu Xia’s teammates assume he is preoccupied because of his fright in the movie they just finished, but unknown to them, Bu Xia was haunted in the bathroom by the same ghost who scared him before. He is alone in the room after his friends excuse themselves to use the restroom, and one of the friendly ghosts warns him to avoid being alone because the ghost who has been following him is full of resentment and has caused sickness and accidents. Before the concerned ghost can finish speaking, Jiang Chi arrives and effectively silences the voice in an instant.

Bu Xia automatically relaxes in front of Jiang Chi, forgetting that the camera on social media live is still open. The two ask about each other’s day and go back into their lovers phase, whispering sweet nothings and exchanging kisses every now and then. Later, Jiang Chi tries to console an embarrassed Bu Xia after he realizes their interactions were recorded and broadcast online. Bu Xia complains about being away from Jiang Chi after losing the bet and being forced to watch a horror film while he is already being haunted in real life. Seeing his boyfriend struggle, Jiang Chi recalls Bu Xia’s sister’s suggested solution, which he has not yet discussed in depth with him. That night, Bu Xia discovers Jiang Chi attempting to draw his seal on a piece of paper and mocks his handwriting before explaining the significance of the seal’s eight characters. Jiang Chi continues to inquire about the seal while masking his curiosity, raising Bu Xia’s suspicion that his sister is involved and noting that the two appear to be conversing privately when he is not present. As the lovers argue, a classmate approaches them and informs Jiang Chi that someone posing as his fiancee is waiting outside, taking them by surprise.

Jiang Chi meets his ”fiancee,” who introduces herself as Bao Bao. Bao Bao informs him that they have been in an arranged marriage with his mother since they were children, and she sees him caring for her. Although he acknowledges their childhood memories, he advises Bao Bao not to get engaged at random and requests that she inform his mother that he is already seeing someone else. Bao Bao assumes he’s talking about a girlfriend, but is corrected by Jiang Chi, who proudly states that he has a boyfriend before returning to a sulking Bu Xia. He consoles his grumpy boyfriend and assures him that he will stand by him if his parents try to come between them. Seeing an opportunity, Jiang Chi suggests that they be bonded together by Bu Xia’s sister to ensure that they will never be separated.

After that, Bu Xia talks to his sister about being bonded to Jiang Chi, who tells him to just let the relationship run its course when he expresses concern that his boyfriend may fall out of love in the future. His sister assures him that bonding with them will result in a more stable relationship and even ensure Jiang Chi’s health. She goes on to say that Jiang Chi will receive the blessing and guidance of their ancestors after they exchange characters in the ceremony. His sister tells him to think about it overnight before hanging up the phone. Soon after, he learns that Jiang Chi has been involved in an accident, finds him in their room with a broken wrist after using his motorcycle to help a friend move, and becomes concerned. Although he finds it strange that Jiang Chi asks if his sister can make a wish or light a candle for his safety, he indulges him and tells him he’ll cut his ”thing” off if he flirts with someone in the future.

With Bu Xia and Jiang Chi by her side, Bu Xia’s sister brings out the two seals drawn by her brother himself to begin the ritual of bonding them and nudges Jiang Chi to confirm if they have done ”it” already. Bu Xia sticks their seals together in front of their ancestor’s shrine and prays for blessings and safety, unaware that the ritual actually passes his ability to hear ghost voices to Jiang Chi instead. After the ritual, Bu Xia’s sister gives Jiang Chi a safety chanting paper necklace to hopefully protect him before praying to their grandfather to always watch over them and leaving. Bu Xia joins Jiang Chi after complaining that he is always talking behind his sister’s back. Overwhelmed by the fact that they are now together, they promise to stick by each other’s sides despite the long road ahead. Bu Xia returns the key necklace to Jiang Chi and thanks him for allowing him to hear his sound. Jiang Chi draws Bu Xia in for a kiss, knowing he is too shy to express his feelings.

While waiting for Bu Xia in the school park with a book in hand, Jiang Chi is startled to hear a static noise around him before a ghostly voice greets him and tells him that he needs him to deliver a message to someone. The unwanted voice stops only when Bu Xia arrives and drags Jiang Chi away, still unaware that his boyfriend is now the boy who can hear ghosts.

Writer’s Thoughts

In a surprising turn of events, we have finally reached the conclusion of ‘Stay By My Side,’ with Bu Xia finally finding silence from the ghosts’ voices, thanks to Jiang Chi and his sister, who planned behind his back. Although it appears sweet on Jiang Chi’s part, we couldn’t help but wonder what his reaction will be once he finds out, which is a shame we won’t be seeing and will now have to rely on our imaginations. Overall, ‘Stay By My Side‘ is a light series that you should watch if you like the enemies-to-lovers trope in an academic setting with a hint of the supernatural that probably could have been explored more. We can’t wait for VIdol’s second installment, ‘You Are Mine,’ to be released on GagaOOLala on September 15th, so stay tuned!
