Marriage is the Solution in ‘Stay By My Side’ Episode 9?

Just as the two become official, a lover’s quarrel ensues when Bu Xia discovers that Jiang Chi is already aware of his ability to hear ghost voices and his role in silencing them due to his sister. Episode 9. I just want to hear your voice.

The basketball team finds Bu Xia sitting dangerously on the river bridge and tries to calm him down because they are afraid he will jump. Bu Xia, with a solemn expression, points to a no-jump sign and laughs at his teammates as they assist him. Bu Xia drinks with the team and tells them about Jiang Chi’s sacrifices to stay with him, such as joining the varsity and continuing his part-time job to have money for their dates. Although they complain that Bu Xia makes them sound pathetic by bragging about how good Jiang Chi is, they can’t help but think it’s sweet. When Bu Xia claims that drinking alcohol will give him liquid courage to apologize to Jiang Chi, the team secretly pours more alcohol into his bottle and tells him to bottom up.

Meanwhile, Jiang Chi, who had just returned to their room, receives a suspicious call from the basketball manager about a package that will be delivered to him, and, even though the package may be dirty, she expects him to take care of ”it”. Jiang Chi waits in the lobby for the package and notices a drunk Bu Xia being assisted by their captain, realizing that the package is Bu Xia. Drunk, Bu Xia misidentifies the Captain as his boyfriend and almost kisses him if he is not able to push him to Jiang Chi, who immediately catches him before he vomits. Jiang Chi takes his boyfriend to the shower room to sober him up, but Bu Xia tries to kiss him instead when he starts to take off his clothes. Despite being affected by his boyfriend’s initiative, Jiang Chi tells Bu Xia that he has no intention of doing it with someone who isn’t sober. Jiang Chi ends up taking care of him all night and warns Bu Xia not to drink too much before he goes out to clean the corridors where they left his vomit. While cleaning up, a senior approaches Jiang Chi and tells him that he admires the two for being together but that the road ahead of them will be difficult.

Jiang Chi sits beside Bu Xia in their room, who is fiddling with his key necklace. When Bu Xia straddles Jiang Chi, the latter stops him from kissing him and tells him not to ignore their problem but rather to discuss it because they are a team. Bu Xia removes his necklace and places it on Jiang Chi. He then confesses that he is afraid his boyfriend will think he is just using him as a heater. Although he used to be annoyed by Jiang Chi, he has learned to accept him, and his presence brings him comfort. Jiang Chi stands firm in his feelings that no one can decide for him and that all of his decisions, including being with Bu Xia after he pulls him into a kiss, are his own. He promises not to leave as long as Bu Xia remains. Bu Xia surprises him by biting into his neck and telling him that he has been imprinted.

The next day, Bu Xia assures Jiang Chi not to be concerned about him and the ghosts’ voices while he is away because he has been listening and giving in to their wishes of relaying their words to their loved ones through his sister. However, one ghost warns Bu Xia that not all ghosts are satisfied with the assistance they have received from him and that some may be dangerous. That night, while Bu Xia is showering, the water heater abruptly shuts down and refuses to turn back on. To his surprise, a strong wind blows on him, causing him to slip and lose consciousness. On his phone, he has missed calls from his sister. He awakens with Jiang Chi beside him, who discovers him unconscious in the bathroom. Meanwhile, Bu Xia’s sister calls Jiang Chi and informs him that his brother’s seal has cracked. Jiang Chi is concerned that he cannot always protect and stay with Bu Xia, so he urges her to find a solution as soon as possible. Bu Xia’s sister shares that she may have discovered something that can help them and asks Jiang Chi to return her brother to the temple for the time being.

At the temple, Bu Xia’s sister shows Jiang Chi the torn seal and an old note from their elders on how to pass on the ability to hear ghost voices, but she feels bad about passing it on because, at the end of the day, this ability is part of their family. Jiang Chi offers to bear Bu Xia’s ability instead, but Bu Xia’s sister informs him that the two must be ”married” before the passing can take place, even though the marriage is not necessarily the ceremony but two people making love with each other. Jiang Chi initially thought Bu Xia’s sister was joking, but she informs him that they must make do with what they have. She also tells him that the act must come from the heart and that Bu Xia must personally press their seals, leaving the task of convincing Bu Xia to agree to Jiang Chi to do it to him. Just then, Bu Xia arrives and pulls his boyfriend away from his sister, believing that the two standing close to each other are his sister playfully stealing his boyfriend. Jiang Chi grins as he takes him for a walk.

While walking around the shrine, Bu Xia tells Jiang Chi about when he was a child and witnessed a terrifying scene that gave him a fever for a week; his grandfather then decided to seal his ability away. Bu Xia complains that if his sister was just as careful, he wouldn’t have his current problem, but Jiang Chi tells him that if it weren’t for that, they wouldn’t be together. Jiang Chi then asks him if he would accept it if they discovered a way to remove his ability to hear ghosts. Bu Xia says yes, but only if he knows what it will take first.

Writer’s Thoughts

The lover’s quarrel has been settled, and a silver lining to Bu Xia’s problem appears to be on the way, thanks to the ancient writing that his sister discovered. Will Bu Xia agree to it, knowing that it will mean passing on his ability to Jiang Chi? Let’s all find out how VIdol’s first BL installment ends in the finale episode of ‘Stay By My Side’ Episode 10 on September 1!
