Episode 7

Wu Shin and Liu Li are eating the French noodles that Gu Jing made especially for them, and the former can’t help but remark that he didn’t think a restaurant with a Chinese focus would be serving them. Wu Shin concludes that Liu Li frequents the restaurant after he says that it’s not really on the menu and that their Chinese noodles are better. As the table he set up for his boss and Liu Li is now being occupied by the latter’s first love, Da-ren serves them angrily in the meantime. On the other hand, Liu Li starts to wonder why his heart doesn’t race as it used to. Da-ren questions Gu Jing’s decision to allow Wu Shin to take his seat, knowing full well that the latter intends to reveal his true feelings for Liu Li. Gu Jing just responds by saying Wu Shin, who was Liu Li’s first love, owns the seat. Da-ren asks him if he really believes what he says, but he chooses to focus on cooking instead.

While Liu Li and Wu Shin are conversing on the opposite side of the restaurant, Liu Li ends up talking about the chef rather than responding to Wu Shin’s questions. In an attempt to rekindle their connection, Wu Shin asks Liu Li how his third book is coming along. To his surprise, Liu Li informs him that the content of his third book will now center on the comforts of food rather than love. Wu Shin goes on to say that he had assumed the third book would conclude the first two since he was returning. Knowing that Liu Li’s apartment is directly above the restaurant—having disclosed on social media that he lives there—Wu Shin says he wants to visit Liu Li’s place as Da-ren returns to retrieve their plates. After hearing the conversation, Da-ren informs Gu Jing and provokes him even more by claiming that Liu Li is a simpleton who might not be able to avoid being taken advantage of. Gu Jing gives Da-ren the order to clean up before he heads over to Wu Shin and Liu Li’s table. He then introduces himself to Wu Shin as the restaurant’s chef, and the latter acknowledges that Liu Li has been mentioning him. When Gu Jing inquires as to what Liu Li might have been saying about him, the former responds that his impeccable cooking has been brought up. Gu Jing asserts that Liu Li will enjoy the food he prepares because he has especially tailored the menu to his preferences. Wu Shin excuses himself after realizing that Gu Jing is more than just Liu Li’s acquaintance, but not before saying that he will be stopping by his house shortly. Additionally, he thanks Liu Li for giving him the handwritten scripts of his books. The mention of handwritten scripts brings back memories of Gu Jing’s early years, and he will be hanging out with a childhood friend who has also asked for his handwritten notes. He tells the friend to eat the noodles they prepared so that they don’t get cold, and he promises to give them more in the future.

When Wu Shin has left, Liu Li says that he can tell Gu Jing is upset. Gu Jing, meanwhile, chastises him for sharing excessive information about himself on social media that might put him at risk. Liu Li is effectively silenced when he also tells him not to invite guys into his apartment. Offended by Gu Jing’s cold words, Liu Li asks him who he thinks he is to order him on who can visit his home. Angered, Gu Jing returns the question to him and further asks who Wu Shin is to him as well. Gu Jing gestures to end the conversation, but Liu Li stops him, asking if he was going to tell him something important, given that he even went so far as to set up a romantic dinner table for the two of them. Gu Jing receives messages from his mother reminding him to send the money she needs to pay the underground bank before he can even respond. He ultimately lets out his annoyance with Liu Li by saying that he has nothing to say to him.

In the evening, Gu Jing recalls his grandmother telling him that some people, like his mother, have baggage they simply can’t let go of. Da-ren, who is about to close up, arrives at that precise moment and spots him. With their hands full of beer, the two find themselves in the park. Gu Jing reveals that since his mother’s return, she has been pestering him about money, particularly her debt to the underground banks. He continues by saying that he does not want to drag Liu Li with his troubles and that someone with a very simple life like him does not deserve to carry his burdens either. Da-ren disputes him, stating that he should not decide on Liu Li’s behalf because falling in love is a two-person affair. The next day, Wu Shin fears that Liu Li will avoid him, so he waits for him outside the apartment building. Liu Li says that Wu Shin should have told him sooner, or else he could have had to wait a lot longer. Wu Shin responds that he is already two years late and that he ought to be the one who is waiting. While they’re at the steakhouse, Wu Shin recalls that Liu Li used to enjoy steak back when they were in college. Nevertheless, he observes that Liu Li appears disinterested in his food and notices his origami. Wu Shin also observes that Liu Li has dark circles under his eyes and says that he should try to stay healthy. Liu Li couldn’t help but wonder what or how Gu Jing would talk to him if he were the one sitting across the table. He thinks Gu Jing will just say that each person has their tastes and that he will prepare something he enjoys the next time. Additionally, he believes that Gu Jing will be more understanding of his origami hobby and might even inspire him to encourage him to create a zoo out of origami. Liu Li confesses to Wu Shin that Gu Jing’s restaurant is like a comfort zone for him because it reminds him of the noodles he used to eat as a child. Wu Shin asks Liu Li if Gu Jing has feelings for him, but he is unable to answer.

When they get back, Wu Shin tells Liu Li that he doesn’t seem to have received his signal and admits that ever since he saw the handwritten scripts from two years ago, he has been thinking about and missing him. He also assures him that he won’t have to respond to him right now and that he will wait. Liu Li finds it difficult to answer as he has always believed that love is a yes-or-no decision. Just as he is about to speak, Gu Jing arrives and confidently tells Wu Shin that people frequently like something new and asks him if Liu Li did not invite him to go upstairs. Wu Shin, on the other hand, responds that he returned to tell him that the old love is still better. While he starts to feel conflicted about them, the two follow Liu Li home.

Writer’s Thoughts:

The rivalry between the love that was lost and the love that is still to come officially begins. While we applaud Wu Shin for his bravery in returning to Liu Li and admitting his love for him, we can’t help but be sad that it might already be too late for him given that Gu Jing has taken over Liu Li’s thoughts. We also thought it was great that Da-ren, the last person we would have expected to offer sound counsel, tells Gu Jing to not make a decision on behalf of Liu Li and be honest with him instead, allowing him to decide for himself whether or not he loves Gu Jing enough to support him or not. Because he indeed decided for the two of them without consulting Liu Li at all when he chose not to confess. It will be interesting to see how the past and the present show that they are deserving of being the right choice now that they are aware of one another’s existence and the rivalry between them.
