Is the newest Japanese GL ‘Ayaka is Inlove with Hiroko‘ worth a watch? BLtai gives you the run-down!
‘Ayaka is Inlove with Hiroko’ is the newest Japanese GL that’s the talk of the town! The first three episodes feature the loveable Ayaka who is intent on changing herself for her office senpai, Hiroko. However, the very oblivious Hiroko just can’t seem to get a grasp that Ayaka is very gay for her.
What is so great about this series is it features actual lesbians in a queer space, talking about relatable queer experiences. Compared to a lot of other GLs, this series has also mentioned the word “lesbian” a lot more times, which is definitely a welcome experience. Lesbians and sapphics find themselves relating to the oblivious and guarded Hiroko who, despite the very obvious flirtation of Ayaka, still calls her straight and only blames herself for thinking that she was the one trying to think that those actions meant more than just professional admiration or friendship. At the same time, other women (especially femme-presenting sapphics) find themselves relating to Ayaka who can’t seem to get the attention of their crushes.
This series is a breath of fresh air due to its perfectly executed comedic timings, romantic gestures, and showing a (dare I say) realistic lesbian experience. It does not shy away from words that were considered as low-key taboo even in queer spaces (hello, internal homophobia and misogyny!). At the same time, the series is not only meant to be enjoyed by sapphics and GL fans but by everyone because it is such an easy watch because of the hilarious and talented actors.
So is ‘Ayaka Is Inlove with Hiroko’ worth a watch? 100% definitely! It’s only on episode three and we have five more episodes to go and hopefully Hiroko will be able to get her gaydar fixed!
