‘Queer Eye’ Production Endures Carjacking During Filming in New Orleans

The cast and crew of ‘Queer Eye’ endured vehicle thefts while shooting for their eighth season in 2022.

‘Queer Eye’ Season 8 is set to premiere on Netflix on January 24, and it is set in New Orleans. While it promises a wonderful season, the cast and crew of the popular queer series had a hard time during its filming in 2022 when they experienced two attempted carjacking and a successful one.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, on July 2, 2022, “five men in ski masks attempted to steal a ‘Queer Eye’ vehicle outside of a field production office while two crew members were unloading it.” The thieves were thwarted, and the producers increased security in the set, even hiring armed guards in addition to existing unarmed ones.

However, another attempt happened five days later, on July 7 — this time successfully — Two men initially tried stealing “a fully decked out GMC truck” but did not manage to get away with it because the doors were locked. They instead went to a nearby vehicle, pulled a production assistant out of it, and drove away. The car was eventually recovered and the suspects were arrested.

An emergency meeting was held with all the cast and crew, and everyone was also offered counseling. There was a question of why filming had to be done in New Orleans when the city is in the middle of a crime wave. Style expert Tan France even threatened to leave the shoot if no additional security would be provided for both hosts and crew. Eventually, Netflix and ITV America responded and took action.

However, due to the increased security costs, the new season’s episode count was reduced from seven to six, and production schedule was cut by a week.

‘Queer Eye’ was renewed for another season which will happen in Las Vegas.
