Heads up, volleyball fans and sapphics (or both)! The sporty sapphic film ‘Rookie’ has finally unveiled its much-awaited trailer!
Director Samantha Lee has dropped the official trailer for the highly anticipated sapphic film on her Twitter with the caption “#RookieFilm August 4-13, 2023.”

The trailer introduces the viewers to the awkward 6-footer teen Asuncion, also known as Ace, (played by Pat Tingjuy) who is forced to learn and play volleyball half-heartedly for the SL Angels when the Catholic school she transferred to does not have a basketball team due to homophobia from the nuns running the institution.
Her whole life eventually changes when she meets the star player, Jana, played by Aya Fernandez (Stand-In Love), who is strong-headed and a little intense. Through training and bonding through the initiation of their coach, played by veteran actress Agot Isidro, the two eventually catch feelings and well, the rest is up to the viewers to see on the big screen. The trailer promises lots of sweet moments though, like the two leads comparing hand sizes, standing in an almost kiss, and many more that will surely excite sapphic fans.
‘Rookie’ is written by Natts Jadaone and directed by Lee who is known for her sapphic films such as ‘Baka Bukas’ (2017), ‘Billie and Emma’ (2018), and the iWantTFC series ‘Sleep With Me’ (2022). The sporty sapphic film will also have Filipino star volleyball players Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos, and Ara Galang making cameo appearances in the film, as well as up-and-coming superstar player Jelai Gajero who have all made appearances in the trailer.

‘Rookie’ is an official entry to the 2023 Cinemalaya Independent Philippine Film Festival and will be released from August 4 to 13.
