Project 8 Projects has released a sneak peek of their new queer movie, ‘Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing).’
The production company posted the 30-second clip on Facebook with the caption, “Nice. Finally. Another sneak peek at Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing) – Cinemalaya’s first full-length animated film! Coming this August 4-13, 2023! #ItiMapukpukaw #TheMissing #Cinemalaya2023”
The teaser shows the two main characters flirting, as Eric gets asked to go home together to which he says yes.

‘Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing)’ is a “first of its kind” queer drama animation about Eric who meets an alien who wants to abduct him from Earth following the death of his uncle and amid his inner struggles. It is said to be the first animated feature full-length film entry as Cinemalaya “opens its doors to the various kinds of films for competition in the years to come.” The film also stars award-winning actor Carlo Aquino, Gio Gahol, and Golden Globe and BAFTA Award-nominee Dolly de Leon.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin, the writer and director of the film, Carl Joseph Papa said that on dealing with an adult topic, Carl shared his personal and dark experience in the past through rotoscope animation. Papa said that he hopes that in making the character Eric, he would have made a “refuge for people who suffer the same fate as he does.” Papa added that for those who have not, he hopes that the film would “shed more light on the topic, give information, foster understanding, and initiate a conversation.”
The award-winning director is known for ‘Ang ‘di paglimot ng mga alaala (The Unforgetting) (2014)’, ‘Paglisan (2018)’, ‘Manang Biring (2015)’, and ‘Love Bites (2017)’.
‘Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing) will screen at the 2023 Cinemalaya Independent Philippine Film Festival from August 4 to August 13.
