Trans Filmmaker Isabel Sandoval Teases New Project ‘Moonglow’

Sandoval excitedly shared on her social media that the upcoming film set in the Philippines is inspired by two classic movies, ‘Casablanca’ and ‘In a Lonely Place’. She added that the new project will juxtapose elements of the gritty world of crime and politics and lush romanticism in old Manila.  Lastly, Sandoval will explore the tragedy of losing one’s moral compass as an elegy to the death of a person’s idealism and integrity. 

Sandoval was recognized for her award-winning 2019 feature film ‘Lingua Franca’ which she both starred in and directed. ‘Lingua Franca’ is about an undocumented transgender Filipina immigrant (Olivia) in the U.S.  After its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, the film has won Sandoval multiple awards and accolades from various award-giving bodies for her portrayal of Olivia. 

After ‘Lingua Franca’, she then directed an episode of FX’s ‘Under The Banner Of Heaven’ with Hollywood A-lister Andrew Garfield and directed some episodes of Prime Video’s ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty. Although Sandoval is successful with her US-based projects, the trans-actress-director emphasized that her storytelling will always find its way back to her homeland— the Philippines. 

 She is scheduled to start shooting ‘Moonglow’ on April 9.
