Episode 6
Wu Bi’s father discovers his wife drunk after phone calls to her son go unanswered. He decides to find his stepson for a talk. Su Yu meets his stepfather for the first time; the latter attempts to tell him that his mother misses him and that they can transfer him to a better school. He also promises to treat him the same way he treats his own son. Su Yu refuses to be recognized as his stepfather’s son, as he already has a father and tells him to stop his wife from meddling in their lives.
That evening, Wu Bi returns to Su Yu’s house, where the latter tells him about his encounter with his stepfather. He advises Su Yu to wish evil things on the stepfather’s son in order to get even; the fan subsequently falls into him and injures him. He grabs the opportunity to spend the night again. At the same time, the school contacts both guardians about the approaching parents meeting: Su Yu’s father for him and his mother for Wu Bi.
During the parents meeting, everyone praises Su Yu, making his father proud, despite the two’s argument about the old wedding coat he wore for the meeting, which enrages his son. He immediately left just as his ex-wife arrived. Her high-profile appearance drew attention, resulting in gossip the next day that intrigues Su Yu, as he knows that Wu Bi’s father attended instead. He starts asking Wu Bi questions about his parents and tries to follow him home discreetly. Aware of Su Yu’s doubts, Wu Bi hires an actor to act as his dad when the former visits him. To his relief, Su Yu seems to fall for the act. At home, Su Yu feels guilty for doubting his friend and father.
Episode 7
Bo Kuang believes his crush likes him but is surprised when the latter requests that he deliver the stars she folded to Mao Chong instead. Meanwhile, Wu Bi’s father discovers his new apartment and the actor posing as his father. Wu Bi finds his real and fake fathers arguing. The father and son were fighting again when Su Yu came in. Su Yu is taken aback when he sees his stepfather with his friend and realizes that Wu Bi is the stepson of his mother. He walks away, but Wu Bi follows who admits to conspiring with Su Yu’s father about the nature of their relationship, wanting to be friends with him. Meanwhile, he tells Wu Bi that he can’t believe the other boy pretended to be his friend when his father married his mother, making the latter understand that Su Yu is his stepbrother.
Back at his apartment, his father questions him as to when he met Su Yu and why he switched schools behind his back, but his son responds by asking what kind of father he is for not knowing. Su Yu confronts his father about Wu Bi, the latter finally admits that he assisted Wu Bi while working to get him a new uniform, but has no idea who he is. Su Yu figures that his father is unaware that Wu Bi is his ex-wife’s stepson. Wu Bi goes to Su Yu’s house the next day to confront him as he feels it was Su Yu’s mother who destroyed his parents’ marriage; meanwhile, Su Yu still feels betrayed and is furious at being blamed for his mother’s fault. Furious, Wu Bi storms out and skips school to party for the next few days, while Su Yu is asked about his whereabouts. Su Yu sees his mother at school, who is happy that the stepbrothers have finally met. She recounts seeing Su Yu’s father during the parents meeting and makes fun of him for wearing an old wedding coat, which irritated her son. Aunt Zhou knits scarves for Su Yu and Wu Bi, but the latter informs her that his classmate does not need them. Duo Duo hugs Wu Bi’s scarf to sleep. A classmate calls Su Yu to speak with Wu Bi, who is not participating in the classroom, resulting in another argument. Su Yu hits Wu Bi but the former does not hit back.
Episode 8
Wu Bi breaks down while hanging out with his friends, unhappy that after being hit by Su Yu, he can’t seem to hate him. He mumbles drunkenly that he thought he’d found a true friend in him. His friends plan revenge for him. Meanwhile, Su Yu is mended by Duo Duo, who wonders why Wu Bi hasn’t been around recently; he responds that the latter is lost and can’t seem to find his way home. The next day at school, Su Yu’s mother waits for him and tries to give him money so he won’t apply for scholarships, which the former rejects. Unbeknownst to them, someone took a photo of Su Yu and placed it on the school forum, claiming that he is truly wealthy and is only pretending to be poor. It also mentions his mother is a mistress who married into a wealthy family. Students began to gossip about Su Yu, and reached Wu Bi, who was accused by the former of being the one behind the post. Out of spite, Wu Bi concurs that he did it to hurt him.
Wu Bi notices Duo Duo waiting on his way home and approaches her, telling her that Su Yu did not go to school that day, but the little girl claims she is waiting for him. She gives her a knitted scarf and tells him that Su Yu told her Wu Bi hasn’t been around recently because he’s lost so this time, she’ll be the one to guide Wu Bi home, as her home is also his. Su Yu returns to find his father and Aunt Zhuo eating without Duo Duo. He can’t help but observe the two together. Duo Duo comes in and tells Su Yu’s father that Wu Bi is outside to talk. Wu Bi realizes that Su Yu has not revealed his true identity. Later, he confronts his friends who appear to be behind the post and orders them to apologize publicly, resulting in people at their school apologizing to Su Yu as well who later learns that Wu Bi is changing schools. At home, he finds his dad using a gift from Wu Bi. He tries to take it, but his father refuses to give in. Frustrated, he blurts out that Wu Bi is the son of his mother’s new husband.
Writer’s Thoughts:
In contrast to the light pilot episodes last week, ‘Stay With Me’ episodes 5-8 have begun to draw deeper emotions between the two characters and the people around them. Let’s see how this development will affect the two’s budding friendship in episodes 9-12 dropping next week!
