Episode 1.

Two boys argue about one of the questions from the exam when Su Yu (played by Zhang Jiong Min), the president and top of the class, passes by with a straight face and tells them the correct answer. On his way home, Su Yu greets a group of aunties who praise his looks but talk about his mother abandoning him and getting into a second marriage with a rich man after he is out of sight. At home, he finds that his father was scammed with a box of potatoes as a freebie from a sale but takes it lightly and claims that his purchase is still worth it for his son, who likes potatoes.

In a mansion, Su Yu’s estranged mother, Zhang, dines with his new husband and stepson, Wu Bi (played by Xu Bin), and receives sarcastic remarks from him about how she will not be able to replace his deceased mother. Wu Bi’s father instructs his wife to enroll her kid in the same school as the former, which pleases her but irritates his son. He walks into his late mother’s room and recalls her painting a sculpture to give to the son of a new friend, who later becomes his stepmother. The following day, he meets with his maternal aunt and asks her to assist him with transferring schools to avoid encountering his stepmother’s son.

Meanwhile, Su Yu’s mother informs him that he will be switching schools courtesy of his stepfather, which he declines. Wu Bi is introduced as a transferee in Su Yu’s class. After interrogating him about singing an old song during recess, Wu Bi tells Su Yu that he looks like a sculpture from his room, which made the latter angry because he had facial paralysis. The next day, Wu Bi pranks a sleeping Su Yu by shooting him with a homemade bow and arrow, earning him a glare. Su Yu responds by taking the toy and using it to pop Wu Bi’s bubble gum in front of the class. At Aunt Zhou’s food stalls, Su Yu’s father plays with her daughter, Duo Duo.

Episode 2

During another exam, Wu Bi pressures his seatmate into snatching a sleeping Su Yu’s paper and changing his answer; however, the latter still received full points because the teacher was aware of his talents. Aunt Zhou pays Su Yu a visit for dinner with Duo Duo and presents him with a new pair of shoes, observing that his shoes have already worn out and his father does not have the money to replace them. The next day, his father discovers that his son did not order a new school uniform in order to save money, which saddens him because he cannot provide for his kid. He attempts to win money by betting on lotteries.

Noticing Su Yu’s new shoes, Wu Bi steps on them repeatedly during a basketball game to annoy him, making the latter go back to their room and plot revenge on the former by smearing ink on the paper he used to wipe his face and embarrass him. Refusing to accept defeat, Wu Bi glues Su Yu’s shoes on the floor but is surprised that the latter was able to remove them using his knowledge of Chemistry.

Wu Bi packs his belongings at their mansion when his father suggests that Zhang bring her son over, which irritates him. He moves into a new home and, by chance, hires a laborer who happens to be Su Yu’s father, who works part-time to purchase his son a new uniform. Wu Bi notices he appears to be in pain and asks him to rest for a bit, which leads to them discussing the latter’s kid, which makes him envious that the son has a father who would do anything for him. He avails himself of his labor again and opens up about running away from home. Su Yu’s father tells him that parents may have different ways of expressing love, but no parent does not love their child and that as he grows up, he’ll understand these challenges and decisions. Su Yu’s father hopes for his son not to end up like himself.

Episode 3

After getting his contact number, Wu Bi sends Su Yu’s father home with meals. Su Yu invites Duo Duo and his friend Bo Kuang to eat with them. His friend tells him about a Taiwanese transferee he has a crush on. During Chemistry class, Su Yu’s seatmate, Mao Chong, forgets about his book and decides to borrow it from Bo Kuang; on his way, he meets the Taiwanese transferee, Xiao Rou, who appears to be interested in him. Wu Bi is about to go home when he notices the laborer waiting at their school and is surprised to see him pick up Su Yu. He follows the two home and recalls his conversation with Su Yu’s father, feeling bad about how he treated Su Yu previously.

Wu Bi purposefully pours a condiment on Su Yu during class in order to buy him a uniform. Meanwhile, Su Yu is ambushed by a gang of thugs who demand his money. They were going to harm him when Wu Bi intervened and fought them off. Wu Bi accompanies him home, where Su Yu’s father meets them and invites the former to dinner. Su Yu is surprised that the two knew each other; his father pretends Wu Bi is the son of a friend in order to conceal his part-time employment. They agree not to reveal the nature of their relationship with Su Yu.

The next day, Wu Bi pretends to run into Su Yu on their way to school in order to protect him from the thugs. Their classmates are surprised to see the two of them together. During PE, Su Yu approaches Wu Bi and asks why he knows how to fight; the latter decides to teach him self-defense. They are joined by Su Yu’s friends when they realize that the two are not fighting but just training.

Episode 4

Su Yu sees the thugs that Wu Bi fought with come back and shouts at Wu Bi to run away. Wu Bi ends up in an elementary school and finds Duo Duo, who is waiting for Su Yu’s father to pick her up. He decides to bring her home but fails to contact Su Yu’s father due to a faulty phone, causing an alarm in the neighborhood. Su Yu returns home to discover his father searching for Duo Duo; a few minutes later, Wu Bi appears with her and apologizes for causing worry. Aunt Zhou invites him to stay for dinner. Su Yu finds Wu Bi in his room browsing his childhood photos, which irritates him. He orders him to leave. Later that night, Su Yu has a nightmare of a younger version of himself looking for his mom, who left and finds his father telling him he will be leaving too.

The thugs return the next day and try to corner Su Yu and Wu Bi again when the latter’s bodyguards arrive and fight with them. When Su Yu inquires about their origins, Wu Bi lies and claims that they are probably school security guards. At home, Duo Duo pretends to be a doctor for a friend she injected in the buttocks with a toy syringe but refuses to allow the other to do the same to her. Su Yu and Bo Kuang are talking about the latter’s crush when they notice Duo Duo’s friend crying outside while she ignores him.

Wu Bi, on the other hand, meets with old classmates who try to convince him to return to their school. They ask him if he has met his stepmother’s son before, which irritates him. He leaves them and goes to Aunt Zhou’s food stall, whose noodles remind him of his mother. Later, the mother of Duo Duo’s friend arrives and informs them that her kid is bleeding. Aunt Zhou encourages her daughter to apologize, but she refuses, claiming that her friend insulted her about not having a father. Wu Bi brings a sleeping Duo Duo home and talks with Su Yu, who informs him that the child’s father is in jail and is unaware. Empathizing with the child who is separated from her parent, Wu Bi opens up about losing his mother and her last artwork, a sculpture of a boy that reminded him of Su Yu, clarifying that his previous comment was not an insult but rather a heartfelt compliment.
