Salma Hayek’s Christmas Film ‘El Sabor de la Navidad’ Tackles Trans Acceptance

El Sabor de la Navidad

Salma Hayek revealed her upcoming Christmas film ‘El Sabor de la Navidad’ will be tackling trans acceptance within families.

In an interview with Variety, the 57-year-old actress talked about the importance of portraying a specific mother-and-daughter relationship onscreen.

One of the storylines of the film follows a mother (played by Mónica Dionne) who must learn to accept her trans daughter Penelope over a tense Christmas dinner.

“Sometimes when it’s a family member, you have to accept first, and then understand,” the Mexican-American star said.

Hayek stressed the importance of understanding so that one is not merely tolerating a loved one but giving unconditional love to them.

Hayek also invited people to watch the film “with both your transgender best friend and your mother.”

Meanwhile, Tamez, who wrote the film, put emphasis on the power of storytelling in “resonating” with audiences outside the queer community.

Tamez said that he was trying to present three stories about love and the trans storyline was the story that resonated with him as a member of the gay community. Tamez remarked that it was a story that would echo to people regardless of their situation.

‘El Sabor de la Navidad’ is a drama-comedy that follows three different but intertwined groups of friends and families in Mexico as they try to balance tradition and change during Christmas.

The film is directed by Alejandro Lozano and co-produced by Hayek under her production company Ventanarose.

The Spanish language film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13, Wednesday. It will run until September 17.

Aside from the trans-themed Christmas film, the TIFF will screen several LGBTQ+ films like the documentary of Lil Nas X, Fawzia Mirza’s queer Bollywood-themed film ‘The Queen of My Dreams,’ Elliot Page’s latest film ‘Close To You,’ and Janis Pugh’s lesbian drama ‘Chuck Chuck Baby.’
