Here’s What To Know About Kristen Stewart’s Sapphic Thriller ‘Love Lies Bleeding’

Kristen Stewart’s queer thriller ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is finally out, and since its premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 20, the film has received rave reviews!

Distributed by A24, the company behind ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘Talk to Me’, ‘Midsommar’, and ‘Hereditary’, Stewart’s sapphic bodybuilder movie can be brutal, and bloody, but also romantic at the same time.

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ tells the story of two women — Lou (Kristen Stewart), a gym manager, and Jackie (Katy O’Brian), a bodybuilder. The two fall into a passionate relationship, and “their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.”

The film is directed by Rose Glass and also stars Ed Harris, Jena Malone, and Dave Franco.

So, what have the reviews said so far about ‘Love Lies Bleeding’? Without spoilers, it’s good stuff, apparently.

In a review by Variety, Owen Gleiberman described its beginning as “lean and mean” but it eventually “grows slowly and steadily more delirious.” It also “generates enough ultra-violence and gonzo twists to be a midnight movie.”

IndieWire and The Hollywood Reporter both praised Stewart and O’Brian’s chemistry, with IndieWire’s Kate Erbland describing them as “crackling,” adding that Director Glass “funnels [the two] into a series of genuinely hot sex scenes that more than prove the necessity for such sequences in films that hinge on actual human romantic relationships.”

Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro furthered that ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is the “most nail-biting movie” of Sundance, noting that it received a standing ovation from the audience.

While ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ has already made its premiere, fans will still have to wait until March 8 (in the US) and April 19 (in the UK) for its theatrical run. So for now, watch the trailer below:
