LGBTQ+ film distributor Cinephobia Releasing has picked up the gay Italian romantic film ‘‘Fireworks’ for international distribution and plans to make the film digitally available in the US on December 19.
‘Fireworks’ or “Stranizza d’amuri” was released in Italian theaters earlier this year and won the Nastri d’Argento prize (selected by Italian film critics) and the Italian Golden Globe for Best Feature Debut on its run at a number of international film festivals.
The film follows the story of the two boys, Gianni (played by Samuele Segreto) and Nino (played by Gabriele Pizzurro), and their forbidden romance that played a significant role in the Italian Gay Rights movement in the ’80s.
An official synopsis of the film said “In 1982, in the heat of a Sicilian summer, two teenage boys, Gianni and Nino, meet and fall in love. The relationship soon becomes a topic of gossip in the small town and despite their families’ objections the two dream of living together, something the community is determined to stop.”
