The first look, poster, and trailer have been released for the gay biographical film ‘Cassandro’ starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Bad Bunny.
In a tweet by Film Updates on August 21, Monday, a new photo has been unveiled where Saúl Armendáriz (Bernal) and Felipe (Bad Bunny) are smiling at each other while sitting close together in what appears to be a forest.
The poster for the film has also been revealed with the wrestler fabulously posing and sitting atop a wrestling ring post.
And finally, the much-awaited trailer is finally here! The two-minute clip shows the beginning of ‘Cassandro’ as an “exotico” (a male wrestler fighting/performing in drag) as the Spanish version of “I Will Survive” plays.
‘Cassandro’ is based on the true story of Saúl Armendáriz, a wrestler whose ring name is the title of the film. On Prime Video’s official website, the synopsis says: “Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso, rises to international stardom after he creates the character Cassandro, the ‘Liberace of Lucha Libre.’ In the process, he upends not just the macho wrestling world, but also his own life.”
Armendáriz began his professional wrestling career as a last resort in El Paso, Texas in 1988 as “Mister Romano”. However, he was encouraged to abandon the character a year later. He changed his ring name to Cassandro in late 1989. Cassandro The Exotico, who Bernal plays in the biopic, was a trailblazer and an icon for queer people interested in lucha libre.
‘Cassandro’ is directed by Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams. The cast also includes Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rosa, Joaquín Cosío, and Raúl Castillo.
‘Cassandro’ premiered last January 2023 at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. It will be released in limited theaters on September 15, and then premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 22.
