A Portrait of a Happy Family Throughout The Years in “Little One”

Little One

Pregnant and nervous with her first child, Joy asked how her gay dads managed to raise her with so much love throughout her life. Find out how in the Filipino short film ‘Little One‘.

Little One

Joy experiences her first pregnancy and in a fit of nervous feelings, she asks her two dads about what they felt when they realized they were ready to be parents. She sat them down interview-style, complete with a camera setup. Affectionately, she calls one of them “Papa” and the other one “Daddy”. Her Papa, Tino, fondly calls Iko “honey” so they can sit down and answer her questions about parenthood. Iko, however, does not seem to look that well. Tino still tried to answer the question, with a proud look from Iko… until Iko suddenly clutched his chest and seemed to have a heart attack. Joy rushed to close the camera as they called for help.

At the hospital, Tino talks to the healthcare professionals and goes inside the hospital room with his family. He looks at his daughter taking a nap on the edge of the bed where his partner is resting. He takes the camera that Joy was holding and goes to the table. He notices a butterfly flying at the window and sits down to watch the clip that his daughter just took. He, then, decided to record his own video. Tino records himself saying that Joy is sleeping very soundly right now so he thought about recording a video himself to answer the question that she asked earlier.

Tino starts off by acknowledging Joy’s fears about how she’s scared of raising her child alone and without her parents. He confesses that like her, he and Iko were just as scared when they first got to be her parents. He said that the day they got her was such an unforgettable day. Tino said that he and Iko were so nervous when they first got her, but all of those anxious feelings immediately went away when they finally got to see and hug her for the first time. He said that nothing compared to the happiness that she brought to their lives. Although it was tough, she was worth all the trouble because she was such a smart kid.

But it was also not all rainbows and butterflies, because as gay parents in a Catholic country, they were not exactly the conventional parents. Tino acknowledges this and says that people were indeed looking at them strangely whenever they were in public. And up until today, he jokes, he is still not sure if people look at them strangely because of their “unconventional” setup or if it’s due to Joy’s cuteness. Tino also confesses that it’s probably not noticeable, but Iko and him are still not sure about how to be the best parents, but they make up for it every day by trying hard, all for their little girl.

The journey to Joy growing up was accompanied by such supportive parents, making her a brave and kind soul as an adult, and now as a mother. Tino finishes the recording by telling her that they love her very much and that she is the best thing that happened to them. He also tells her that even though her parents will no longer be there to raise her child with them, he knows that she will be able to do it very well. As he was about to turn off the camera, Joy suddenly woke up to ask her Papa who he was talking to, but Tino said nobody.

It was a few years since Iko’s heart attack, and Joy’s son was already in school. He was playing with his superhero toys when he noticed a yellow butterfly around him. He caught it by his hand, showed it to his mom, and let it go. Joy smiles.

The butterfly stops at their family photo, joining a blue butterfly.

Writer’s thoughts:

The film is so beautifully done, showcasing how a normal family showing support and unconditional love to their child can create generations of healthy familial relationships. It shows that two gay people can be a complete family despite being in a society that does not seem normal. This short film is a must-see, especially given how heartfelt and emotional it is.
