A Cat-and-Dog Affair Happens in ‘Maybe It’s Love’

Maybe It's Love

Adapted from the playwright by Cheng-Ping Hsu, ‘Maybe It’s Love’ follows the immoral affair of Dog, played by Charveil Chen, and Cat, played by Duncan Ku, a gay actor who made it big in the domestic and international adult film industry.

If you’re curious about this porn actor’s foray into more safe-for-work acting, keep on reading.

‘Maybe It’s Love’ starts off with a man organizing toiletries with two labels— one with pink Post-its and one with yellow Post-its. He tears off and takes the ones marked with yellow. A younger man then sinks lower into the bathtub and submerges into the water.

“I have a boyfriend.”

The two guys are in a bathtub engaging in a conversation as they bathe each other languidly. The older guy replies that he knows the other has a boyfriend. The younger guy apologizes and tells him that he should have made it clear from the start. The older man agrees because it could lead to unnecessary issues and complications but he brushes it off, saying he is too old to be getting angry about such things. Yes, because getting informed that your hook-up is a taken man after doing the deed is not something that can invoke wrath or displeasure.

The older adds that his being taken does not prevent him from liking the younger guy anyway. Furthermore, the younger guy just called him “wife” in bed. Okay, let’s go, morals.

The younger counters that it was just something that he said while having sex. The older presses that maybe they can be together despite that slight complication. He repeats that he has a boyfriend, he’s taken, but the older presses that yes, he heard him, and he should just treat him as a “god brother.” Who else is gagging?

The younger man is initially apprehensive so the other asks if it is because he is not his type. The younger denies it and tells him he would not have asked him out if he did not like him. The other asks then if it’s because of his age since he’s older. The younger answers that he actually prefers mature men. The older quips that he has already been classified as a “mature guy” and tickles him. He then questions if his boyfriend is older too, to which he answers no, he is actually around the same age as he is.

The older notes that he must have a variety of preferences and tastes but the other disagrees and says you don’t really have to end up with someone who is to your taste. The older man then asks about his type. The younger refuses to answer. The older adds that he does not know whether he and his boyfriend are in an open relationship but says that it’s not really important. Raise your hand if you disagree.

Anyway, the older man plays with the other’s hands and then asks for a chance because he really wants to be with him. The younger stutters and thinks of an answer before getting pressed on by the older guy that he doesn’t really expect him to break up with his boyfriend, he just needs to think of him as his other guy. He ruffles the younger man’s hair and tells him not to get pressured and to just message him whenever he wants seeing as he has his Line anyway. But wait, he doesn’t know what to call him. The younger guy ponders for a bit before answering he can call him “Dog.” They giggle over it and the older man proceeds to call himself his “Cat.” Cat kisses Dog’s knuckles and Dog kisses him in return.

Maybe It's Love

Thus begins their immoral relationship. Cat and Dog start sleeping with each other, with Dog even calling him “wifey” over text messages sometimes.

“Giving him what he wants will only make us lose ourselves. We’ve become… deformed.”

The young man, Dog, emerges from the water in the bathtub. He calls for Cat and tells him that he needs to hurry up because his boyfriend is on his way already. Dog asks him to organize his stuff on the vanity and to not use his boyfriend’s stuff. Dog says Cat confuses his and his boyfriend’s things which makes it harder for Dog to explain to his boyfriend. Cat is visibly annoyed and asks if he’s not allowed to buy the same brand of things as Dog’s boyfriend. Dog replies that he can tell Cat is being deliberate and orders him to take the white socks from the laundry basket too.

Cat tells him that the socks are not his which prompts Dog to ask whose it is and for Cat to hurry up changing. Cat takes a deep breath and steels himself before asking Dog if he loves him. Dog avoids the question and tells him to be quick on his way out. Cat presses him for more though, and asks Dog if he ever loved him. Dog has had enough though and tells him his boyfriend will come any minute so he better get ready to leave. But okay, for the sake of it, Dog tells him that he loves him. Cat asks him to repeat it and Dog coldly says the magic words again before asking him to leave for the nth time.

Cat then asks if Dog would break up with his boyfriend if he truly loves him. Dog says no. Cat asks what is he then, is he Dog’s boyfriend too? Dog angrily asks just what Cat is trying to do asking all these questions.

Cat lashes that if Dog even paid just the slightest bit of attention to him, he would have known that he never wears white socks nor does his boyfriend. And since when has he ever gotten in his way? Cat asks if he has ever loved his boyfriend. Dog tells him not to impose his patronizing attitude upon him and to not meddle with his relationship.

Cat scoffs. He tells Dog that he’s been willing to be the other man up until this stage so he probably deserves Dog’s treatment to him but Cat asks if has Dog ever thought about his boyfriend’s feelings. Cat accuses Dog of using his glorified excuse not to break up with him so he pities the boyfriend.

Dog just brushes him off and wills him to just get lost already. Cat begs him one last time for him to stop acting like a real dog, an animal who just wants to mate. Cat tells him he already has him, his boyfriend, and other friends-with-benefits who’ll frequent his house. Dog denies that there are others or that there is Cat to consider because there is only his boyfriend who matters in the end. And now that Cat knows that there is only one that Dog loves, he should seriously consider leaving now. Dog calls him an old geezer which hurts Cat. Cat gathers himself for a moment before telling him about how selfish Dog is during the duration of their affair. He says that his ego is lying to him which affects Dog.

A few moments pass before Dog reaches out to embrace Cat. Cat pushes him away and tells him he doesn’t want him anymore before grabbing his things. Dog frantically tries to stop him from leaving and holds him in his arms but Cat struggles against him and slaps him into reality. Both are dumbfounded. Cat turns into a crying mess and Dog joins him as he crumbles onto the floor.

Writer’s thoughts:

There’s really not much to say about this film. Cat wanted to break the established rules and Dog just wanted to seek carnal pleasure. Ultimately, neither of them ended up getting what they wanted and that was probably deserved after getting into such an immoral affair.

The acting is nothing to write home about and the same can be said about the writing. Perhaps it could have been better but the film just felt rushed and incomplete. There could be hidden meanings on why they’re named after animals, but honestly, at this point, it doesn’t really matter because it’s executed poorly. I’d say you’re better off exploring other movies. If you do want to give this a try just for the eye candy that is Duncan Ku, then sure, it’s just 12 minutes anyway. Just manage your expectations.
