In a cafe, Han Joon tutors a student who receives a phone call from a friend, triggering Han Joon’s recollection of his confession to Yoo Jae. Later, as he finishes another part-time job, he looks at the matching pair of shoes he shares with Yoo Jae. Thinking back to their argument, Han Joon remembers how Yoo Jae became angry when he expressed his belief that their friendship would be ruined if they didn’t start dating. At home, Han Joon gazes at the untouched chocolate he had saved from their recent argument. Yoo Jae’s words about contacting him once he has sorted out his feelings echo in his mind.

The following day at college, Han Joon catches sight of Yoo Jae as he rides his bike. Lost in his thoughts, Han Joon accidentally bumps into a senior who claims he’s a member of the boxing club —explaining the bruise on his eye. The senior insists on being called hyung and extends an invitation to the opening party happening later that day, coincidentally the same invitation Han Joon was looking at last night. At the opening party, Han Joon and Yoo Jae make eye contact. Yoo Jae’s mind drifts back to their graduation day when he retrieved Han Joon’s certificate on his behalf since Han Joon had mysteriously vanished without informing anyone. As Yoo Jae sings on stage, Han Joon notices the girl sitting next to him in tears. She confesses that she misses her mom. This leads them to have a heartfelt conversation about their longing for their family and friends. The girl expresses her envy towards Han Joon for having Yoo Jae by his side as a close friend throughout their college journey. Han Joon remains silent upon hearing the girl’s words and drinks soju, consuming it until he becomes completely intoxicated. Meanwhile, Yoo Jae continues singing on stage, keeping his focus on the drunk Han Joon.

In the next scene, we find Han Joon lying in bed, still drunk, as he mumbles to his mom about drinking alcohol for the first time. Yoo Jae sits on the edge of the bed and asks him if he had a good time. Han Joon responds absentmindedly, but his surprise grows when he realizes that Yoo Jae is actually there. Yoo Jae scolds him gently and advises him to drink in moderation from now on. He then asks for Han Joon’s class schedule and reminds him of their agreement to do everything together in college. Han Joon attempts to speak, but Yoo Jae requests that he goes first. Yoo Jae reflects on the fact that if Han Joon truly had feelings for him, it wasn’t fair for him to disappear overnight. Han Joon promptly apologizes, and Yoo Jae responds by asking if they can be friends again if he is truly sorry. Han Joon eagerly agrees, and they start catching up on each other’s lives. Han Joon shares that he has been doing part-time jobs and proudly shows off the new shirt he just bought. Yoo Jae compliments him on his hard work but suggests the sneakers he’s wearing don’t go well with the outfit so they make plans to go shopping for new shoes the next day. As they prepare to part ways, Yoo Jae notices the discarded chocolate that Han Joon has been holding onto. Han Joon explains that he was planning to throw it away, and Yoo Jae offers to dispose of it for him.

Episode 6: Friends

(Image: Heavenly)

At school, Yoo Jae gives Han Joon a call after learning that his tutoring class got canceled. Han Joon informs him that he is currently with a friend, but doesn’t mention who it is and the lack of disclosure annoys Yoo Jae. Sensing Yoo Jae’s reaction, Han Joon quickly clarifies that he is with Yubin at a cafe in front of the school. At the cafe, Yubin expresses her joy upon learning that Han Joon doesn’t have a girlfriend. However, Yoo Jae interrupts by casually mentioning a girl who gave Han Joon a note at the library. Just then, Yubin receives a text from Ji Young, who invites her for a meal. She extends the invitation to Han Joon, but before he can respond, Yoo Jae cuts in and suggests they stay longer instead since they have something important to discuss.

Han Joon and Yoo Jae enjoy some soju at a restaurant in the evening. Han Joon advises Yoo Jae to stop drinking, but he sulks about Han Joon’s new sneakers and their missed shopping plan. Han Joon reminds him that he was the one who canceled their plans because of a team project. Han Joon tells Yoo Jae he’ll go to the bathroom, and Yoo Jae mumbles that he wanted to choose something better for him. However, Han Joon doesn’t hear it, so Yoo Jae quickly tells him to come back and not disappear. Han Joon returns to Yoo Jae nearly falling off his chair, and as he catches him, Yoo Jae ends up on his shoulder. They make it back to Yoo Jae’s apartment and while assisting Yoo Jae in removing his clothes, he accidentally falls onto Han Joon’s shoulder once more. Han Joon tries to leave, but Yoo Jae insists on sleeping together like before but Han Joon refuses and leaves. The next day, Han Joon practices at the boxing gym with his senior. His hyung suggests recruiting Yoo Jae into the boxing club, but Han Joon is doubtful that he would agree. Once in the corridors, the same senior calls out to Han Joon and reminds him of his offer about the laptop. Yoo Jae, seeing their closeness, appears displeased.

On Han Joon’s birthday, Yoo Jae and Han Joon meet at a cafe, where Han Joon presents his gift. Yoo Jae is surprised by the laptop Han Joon has purchased for him. Han Joon tries to decline the expensive gift, but Yoo Jae insists, explaining that he used his own earnings to buy it. He wants Han Joon to consider it a gift from a family member, to which Han Joon questions if Yoo Jae considers them family, and Yoo Jae quickly responds ‘yes’. Yoo Jae becomes upset and asks if his senior is also considered family, as he would have gladly accepted the gift if it came from him. Coincidentally, Han Joon’s senior calls to inform him of the party with the club members for his birthday. Despite Yoo Jae’s initial reluctance at Han Joon’s invitation to go, he ends up joining and participating in the games. They get picked and ordered to kiss so Yoo Jae attempts to pull Han Joon in but Han Joon pushes him away and abruptly leaves the scene. Yoo Jae tracks down Han Joon at the playground, and Han Joon expresses his struggle with being just friends while harboring feelings for him. Yoo Jae pleads with Han Joon not to leave and that he will not let him abandon him again. In a heartfelt moment, Han Joon leans in and kisses Yoo Jae.

Writer’s Thoughts:

Han Joon’s efforts to separate his friendship and romantic feelings for Yoo Jae encounter a problem when Yoo Jae becomes possessive and reluctant to let him go. Will Yoo Jae come to terms with his true feelings for his friend, or will his uncertain actions create further distance between them?
