What Did You Eat Yesterday?

Episode 7

Shiro and Kenji go on a double date with Kohinata and Wataru at a restaurant. The two couple talk about a lot of trivial things, including how straight-passing Shiro is. Wataru asked Shiro if he was actually bisexual because he let it slip that he liked a female celebrity, Mami Mitsuya, who is the type of woman that straight men usually like. Shiro clarifies that he’s not bisexual, he just likes her as a fan. After the double date, Kenji and Shiro went home, with a cheerful Kenji almost skipping because of how happy he felt that he went on a double date with another gay couple outside their home. But his happiness was cut short because rain was about to fall down so the two had to run back home in a hurry.

Shiro was not spared by the rain and he caught a cold because of it. Kenji was secretly enjoying that Shiro had to depend on him, which Shiro quickly caught on but he was too exhausted to point out. While Shiro is out sick and in bed the whole day, Kenji tries to cook dinner but fails miserably. Although Shiro was stuck in bed, he stayed up listening to his boyfriend’s cooking, pointing out some wrong things he might have done all throughout. Despite a somewhat failed attempt at cooking, however, Shiro still ate everything that Kenji cooked and appreciated Kenji’s effort.

After Shiro started feeling better, he met up with Kohinata once again to get an envelope and some herbs to make him feel better. The two couples, then, are on a double date once again. Wataru started to (intentionally) stir a possible argument when he asked about Shiro’s ideal type which is the complete opposite of Kenji. But the cunning Wataru mentioned that Shiro actually loves him despite not being his ideal type.

When they got home, Shiro baked a cake that he said he would give to Kohinata as a form of thanks for the herbs. While eating the cake he baked, Kenji says that Wataru was so nice because he pointed out that Shiro loved him despite not being his ideal type. Shiro was about to disagree, but he thought about how he finally realized that Kenji actually fell for him at first sight, which made Shiro smile. When they were cleaning up after eating the cake, Kenji found the envelope that Kohinata gave to Shiro, which turned out to be a concert ticket for Shiro’s favorite singer, Mami Mitsuya! Kenji pestered Shiro again if he was actually attracted to women, but Shiro denied and they played a game of cat and mouse around the apartment.

What Did You Eat Yesterday?

Episode 8

Kenji and Shiro are out on a double date once again with a different gay couple, this time. It is now with Kenji’s gay friends. However, Shiro does not seem to be as comfortable to be out with this particular gay couple compared to his friends, Kohinata and Wataru. It was most likely because the restaurant they went to was filled with straight people, and Yoshi and his boyfriend, Tetsu, were too touchy with each other, which made Shiro uncomfortable because of how people would think about them.

After dinner, Shiro was in a sour mood, and Kenji apologized for how the night went. Kenji said that he thought it would be fine to meet another gay couple because they were seeing a lot of Kohinata and Wataru, but Shiro shouted that they met at a place that was not at a gay-friendly district which definitely pushed him out of his comfort zone. He left a dumbfounded Kenji at the bottom of the stairs.

Shiro confides in his friend, Kayako, about how he feels about his relationship with Kenji. He tells him that he needs to make an effort to keep his relationship with him, especially since they are not bound by any contract or marriage, but his actions definitely show that he treasures Kenji a lot. Meanwhile, Kenji asks Shiro if it is fine for Yoshi and Tetsu to come over to talk about what happened during dinner, especially because they felt it was their fault. Despite Shiro’s apprehension to let them come over, he still diligently prepared dinner for his incoming guests.

Yoshi and Tetsu arrived with Kenji and were shocked by how much Shiro prepared. While eating, Shiro was on his toes wondering if his guests would like the food that he meticulously prepared. However, Yoshi and Tetsu were not there to grade his cooking. Instead, they talked about how they needed Shiro’s legal help. Tetsu mentioned that he is at a certain point in his life where he wants to make sure that all his assets will go to his partner, Yoshi. However, since Japan does not have any legal basis when it comes to same-sex rights, it would mean that on his untimely death, all of his hard-earned work will go to his (presumably) homophobic parents. Because of this, Tetsu wants to legally adopt Yoshi so he will be the sole and rightful heir to all of his assets in case he passes away. The two said that they wanted to approach Shiro outside his office because they knew from Kenji that he was not out at his workplace yet. Despite this, Shiro said they can definitely come to his law office and he will help them as much as they can. Yoshi and Tetsu breathed a sigh of relief.

After the guests left, Shiro told Kenji that he should have been upfront with him and that this was what the couple wanted from him. Kenji apologized and announced that he would take out the recycling bags, but really, it was to escape the situation. Shiro was left alone, thinking that he should have told him that he was more frustrated with himself than he was with Kenji.

The next day, Kenji greeted Shiro a good morning and requested Salisbury steak for dinner. Shiro smiled and said he’ll cook it, before leaving for work, and said that his breakfast was on the refrigerator. Kenji saw the thoughtful mean Shiro prepared for him, and there was once again, peace in the household.

Writer’s thoughts:

These two episodes are such an eye-opening experience, especially with how lighthearted they have portrayed a very serious issue – like how gay marriage is still not legal in Japan and how gay common-law partners find a way to make themselves legally bound to each other. Shiro, being straight-passing, also mentioned how he felt like he was a minority among a minority – being gay in a majority straight society, and not being gay enough to be considered “gay”. Such issues are faced by real-life people and the series touched upon the subject lightheartedly. ‘What Did You Eat Yesterday?’ is really such a much-watch.
