What Did You Eat Yesterday?

Episode 5

Shiro goes with his parents back to the hospital for his dad’s post-operation checkup. Thankfully, no further complications were found. Back at home, however, things get more complicated with Shiro’s mom nagging him that he should think more about the seriousness of his relationship with Kenji. She said that Shiro should celebrate New Year’s with them, instead.

When Shiro talked to Kenji about his issue with his parents, Kenji was quiet, but Shiro knew he was angry at him. Kenji basically tells him to accept his fate and be grateful because, despite everything, his parents still support him. Shiro was so worried about Kenji being mad at him that for dinner, he cooked all of Kenji’s favorite food and said that he would spend New Year’s with his parents instead. Kenji smiled and they ate their dinner peacefully.

Come New Year’s Eve, Shiro goes back home to his parents while Kenji spends the night celebrating with his colleagues. However, instead of spending the whole night drinking with his colleagues, Kenji went home by himself and gleefully cooked the Sapporo Ichiban Ramen he had been craving the whole night. As he watched the countdown on their TV, Shiro kept trying to call him and he received an earful when Kenji only answered after a couple of tries. Kenji apologized and said that he was not able to answer his phone because he was cooking Sapporo Ichiban Ramen. Shiro paused for a moment and acknowledged that it was an acceptable excuse because you have to eat the ramen as soon as it gets cooked. The two smiled and celebrated the New Year’s while talking to each other on the phone.

The next day, Shiro’s neighbors came by together with the children in tow. Shiro sees how happy his parents are playing with the neighbor’s children and he feels some sort of guilt that he put aside. Before going home, Shiro’s mom packed up some food (including loads of leftover mochi) that he wanted her to take home. He wanted to talk to his mother about retirement plans, but his mom only said “You already know” and went on to pack more food.

The rest of the week was spent with Shiro cooking all kinds of food that has mochi. So much so that Kenji had to beg him to stop cooking mochi because he had had enough. He was so desperate to eat any other carb that’s not mochi that he would even eat bread being sold by Shiro’s ex! Needless to say, Shiro obliged and let him eat bread.

What Did You Eat Yesterday?

Episode 6

March came around and Shiro received a text from Kohinata, asking him out to dinner. At the same time, the company is receiving a new female apprentice which Shiro’s boss asked him to be the mentor of. Shiro was hesitant, especially because he is a man and people might misconstrue him, but his boss was adamant about making him the new apprentice’s mentor so he could prove that there are still good men in the company. Despite hesitation, Shiro agrees. They go to work together and Shiro feels like the apprentice might have taken a liking to him. At dinner, Shiro goes out with Kohinata. Kenji texts him that he will be out for dinner, and Shiro feels guilty about going to dinner with another man. Kohinata kept talking about his boyfriend, but Shiro kept thinking about the romantic ambiance of the restaurant. His mind wandered around to how it’s bad to be with Kohinata and what’s worse is that he was actually his type. He, then, blurted out that he was living with his boyfriend. They both looked at each other awkwardly. Then, Wataru, Kohinata’s boyfriend finally arrived. He looked nowhere near as Gilbert, as what Kohinata has been saying. Kohinata said that he has been insisting that they meet up because he wanted Wataru to meet Shiro. He stares in disbelief and they continue to eat dinner.

The next day at work, Shiro asked his client to settle a lawsuit against the hospital. At lunch, they talked about the situation and Shiro explained why he wanted the client to settle a lawsuit despite him not making money by agreeing to settle. His apprentice was in awe of him and told him he liked him (for his work ethic) but Shiro, feeling quite handsome, thought that she liked him in a romantic way. Shiro, then, asked if she had a boyfriend, which made her disappointed. In the end, his boss informed him that his apprentice could no longer work with him because she thought he looked at her in a non-professional way.

Shiro felt bad about the way things folded out and realized he was too self-obsessed, so of course, to make himself feel better, he cooked hot pot. He felt better after cooking and eating dinner with Kenji, which Kenji mentioned. Shiro smiled and said he did feel better. After dinner, Shiro showed Kenji a photo of Wataru, telling him the story that Kohinata said he looked like Gilbert, which made Kenji laugh hysterically. Shiro was relieved that Kenji was not mad that he had dinner with two gay guys because the Gilbert story was too hilarious of a story.
