Director of Cult Classic ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ Confirms A Sequel Is Happening!

A sequel to the classic queer comedy, ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ is finally happening!

In an April 19 interview with Deadline, Stephan Elliott, who directed the celebrated cult classic, said that 30 years after its initial release, a sequel has finally been greenlit and that the original movie’s stars Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce, and Hugo Weaving are back “on board”.

In a separate interview for The Guardian, Elliot said that he was initially hesitant about making a sequel but ultimately realized he needed to say something vis-a-vis Trump’s possible comeback.

“People have been screaming for me to do this for 30 years. And suddenly I had the realization that we’re all getting old. We’re losing people,” he said. “And with Trump coming in now – it’s all about to erupt again. Somebody said to me, ‘Is this the right time to make this film?’ I said, ‘It is the perfect time to make this film.’”

The film received critical acclaim when it premiered in 1994 and eventually became one of the biggest queer movies of its time, grossing over $29 million at the box office.

An official synopsis of the original film reads, “When drag queen Anthony (Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, he invites fellow cross-dresser Adam (Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Stamp) to come along. In their colorful bus, named Priscilla, the three performers travel across the Australian desert performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship.”
