‘Heartstopper’ fans are in it for a heartfelt and intense ride this coming season!
Trigger Warning: mentions of eating disorder
Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, one-half of the main couple of ‘Heartstopper’ revealed that the upcoming third season of the beloved queer coming-of-age series will focus on Charlie’s eating disorder. Aside from sharing this important tidbit of information, he also admitted that he is already preparing for the possible criticism he might receive in his portrayal of someone living with an eating disorder in an appearance in Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s (‘Modern Family’ alum) ‘Dinner’s On Me’ podcast.
“All I can do is the best I can do,” added the 20-year-old star.
Locke shared his appreciation of Alice Oseman, the writer of the original Heartstopper graphic novels and the screenplay of the show as well.
“Our writer, Alice, is… I’ve never met anyone who can write quite such serious topics with such heart and such love,” Locke mentioned.
He further added that Oseman– and by extension, the show– is able to allow the audience not to stress themselves out too much while also learning about serious topics that the show is not afraid to tackle such as sexuality, bullying, eating disorders, mental health and more.
“It’s almost like she writes it whilst the audience is always aware there’s a light at the end of the tunnel the whole time,” Locke added.
