Olivia Colman Exits ‘Heartstopper’ Season 3

Olivia Colman is officially exiting ‘Heartstopper’ season 3.

The award-winning actress who played Sarah, Nick’s (Kit Connor) mother in the hit Netflix queer show for two seasons will not be returning to reprise her role.

Colman told Forbes magazine she was not going to be a part of Season 3 of Heartstopper due to her busy schedule. However, she kept her doors open to join on the fourth season, saying, “As long as it’s booked in advance, maybe I’ll be able to do it, yeah!,”

Creator Alice Oseman also spoke up about Colman leaving in a series of Instagram stories on March 28, Thursday, writing, “We tried absolutely everything we could, but it wasn’t meant to be, and that’s just the way the TV world works sometimes. We are so deeply grateful to Olivia for the stunning performance she gave to the show and wish her the absolute best!”

Oseman said that they decided not to recast to the dismay and worry of fans who have been looking forward to a specific scene in season 3 but the showrunner asked fans to not give up on them just yet.

The creator promised to have done everything in her power to preserve that scene as written in the comic, and that she has written in some new elements of the story for the same emotional punch it gives in the comic.

The showrunner asked fans to have faith as Nick’s story from the comics is still important to her but Sarah’s role as emotional support for Nick will be relegated to other characters for now.

The writer concluded, “We’ve all worked really hard and I’m so excited for you to see what we’ve come up with, including a few new casting announcements to come in the next few weeks — some you may have heard about already, others that you haven’t yet…”

‘Heartstopper’ season 3 premieres on October 2024.
