Daniel Craig Praises Drew Starkey’s Audition For Luca Guadagnino Film ‘Queer’: “That’s The Guy”

Is Drew Starkey the next big thing in Hollywood?

First impression matters and that is most especially true for the legendary actor Daniel Craig who has sung praises to ‘Outer Banks’ star Drew Starkey after seeing his audition for the Luca Guadagnino-helmed queer film ‘Queer.’

After seeing Starkey’s tape, Craig told the brilliant Italian director the very words every actor aims to hear: “That’s the guy.”

“I liked Drew from the moment I met him,” Craig told Guadagnino. “He’s such a wonderful, kind human being, and that was very obvious to me from the very start.”

Starkey is set to play Eugene Allerton, a discharged American Navy man whom Lee (played by Craig) encounters while wandering Mexico City’s bars in search of heroin and connection.

An official synopsis of the film reads, “Set in 1940s Mexico City, it follows Lee who has fled from a drug bust in New Orleans. In Mexico City, Lee wanders around the city’s clubs and becomes infatuated with drug user Allerton, a discharged American Navy serviceman.”

Aside from Starkey and Craig, ‘Queer’ also boasts a stellar roster of actors in its cast including Lesley Manville (Secrets & Lies), Jason Schwartzman (The Grand Budapest Hotel), and Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf).

Queer is based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel of the same. The screenplay is by Justin Kuritzkes, making it yet another collaboration for Guadagnino and Kuritzkes, who worked together on 2024’s ‘Challengers.’

Filming began in Rome in late April 2023 at Cinecittà Studios and ended by the end of June 2023. ‘Queer’ does not have a release date as of this writing so stay tuned to BLTai for more updates.
