Reneé Rapp Says ‘Mean Girls’ Regina George is “Absolutely Queer”

The new ‘Mean Girls’ musical remake is out, and Reneé Rapp who plays the iconic Regina George believes her character is queer!

Rapp said that her reimagining of Regina George is “absolutely” part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“For me, she absolutely is [queer],” Rapp told GAY TIMES. “I got into an argument on Instagram about this and, hell yeah, I’m arguing on Instagram – so what?”

Rapp reprised her Regina George role which he played in the Broadway musical adaptation of the film. The new film adaptation was based on the said musical.

Before the new ‘Mean Girls’ film was released, Rapp worked with rapper Megan Thee Stallion on the pop song ‘Not My Fault’ which pays homage to Lindsay Lohan’s line from the original film: “It’s not my fault you’re in love with me or something.”

It is in that song that fans confirmed Rapp’s version of Regina George is queer. In the song, Rapp sings, “It’s not my fault you came with her, but she might leave with me,” and “Can a gay girl get an amen?”

“Somebody was like, ‘She’s not a lesbian,’ and I was like, ‘Alright, so maybe she isn’t to you but for me, she is, so shut up. Be mad. Go home. Touch grass. Play in traffic’,” Rapp, who identifies as bisexual, said.

The original ‘Mean Girls’ remains a camp cult classic, although as a product of its time, queerness is hardly present. In fact, in the original film, one of the characters’ rumored sexuality becomes a source of stress and conflict.

The musical, however, Rapp believes, is “inherently” queer.

“This has so much nuance and there’s so many levels to what I’m about to say, but I think that there are a lot of young people who are very out across the spectrum, right?” she said.

“In pop culture, and obviously I’m going to be biased, but gay people are just generally cooler and better. But, I think that’s more celebrated now, I would hope. Again, in certain spaces, absolutely.”

‘Mean Girls’ is released on January 12 in the US and on January 19 in the UK. It will then be available for streaming on Paramount Plus following its theatrical release.
