Kevin, a civics instructor, attends a performance that has two male artists who are completely covered in a sticky, white substance. The now-dried, white substance begins to peel off like an animal going through molting as the two artists draw closer to one another. As the show comes to a close, the artists start acting maniacally together. The dried white substance is now all over the floor, while the artists are almost as naked as they were born.

On a busy street in the city, Kevin and his friends try to persuade people to sign their petition for same-sex marriage. Afterward, he goes to a male public bathhouse, where he catches the attention of an attractive older man. He runs into another man in the bathroom, who invites him to a sauna room to have sexual intercourse. When Kevin says he only wants to snuggle, the man pushes him away. Kevin, feeling let down, goes to the shower area, where he finds strangers fondling each other’s bodies until one of the bathhouse staff members stops them. Kevin walks up to the corner where the attractive older man, who had earlier kept staring at him, is seated. After locking eyes, the two have protected sex in the man’s expensive condo. The next day, Kevin goes to a restaurant for brunch with the older man, whom he now knows as Gao. During their meal, the two become acquainted and get along rather well. They talk about their careers and life goals, particularly Kevin’s, who thinks that if he doesn’t end up as a teacher, he will probably go into politics to carry on fighting for his principles. Gao, who oversees his family’s gas company, plays along with Kevin’s joke about being his lover.

Kevin’s students mock him for his very flamboyant manners at the school where he teaches. Even Director Lin, the school’s principal, remarks on how particular he seems to be about his appearance. Additionally, Director Lin says that he knows Kevin attends rallies, and while he doesn’t want to interfere, he advises Kevin to consider the impact his extracurricular activities may have on the school’s reputation. Kevin returns home to the house he shares with his mother, with whom he is close before he meets up with Gao. Kevin tells him as they stroll side by side that he hopes to meet a partner who will return his love, get married, and spend their golden years together. That night, Gao looked at Kevin with affection as he sang at a local bar. Once back in the city, Gao visits the factory, where his ex-wife, Wei, follows him around. She reminds him that he needs to discuss the replacement of the air conditioner with his father because he is unable to decide on his own. Wei also wants to know if she has to accompany Gao on his next hospital visit and how his body is responding to his medications. Wei informs Gao that she still wants a child before she leaves. In the meantime, Kevin shows his mother Gao’s photo and tells her that he is his lover. Although Gao’s mother compliments him on his attractiveness, she also advises him that what should matter most is personality rather than looks. Additionally, Kevin acknowledges that he is genuinely concerned about Gao since the latter has become silent about him. Kevin can’t help but worry, so he visits the factory and Gao’s condominium building. There, he discovers that Gao is hospitalized after having tonsillitis surgery. He runs into Wei, who is also visiting Gao, and learns that he is his ex-wife. Kevin meets a friend, Jo, at one of their rallies and asks if he thinks he is a homewrecker due to the complicated relationship between Gao and Wei. Jo advises him to ask Gao directly instead of asking other people. On top of his problems, he also continues to experience mocking from his students. To the surprise of Kevin’s mother, Kevin and Gao decide to live together. Despite not having met Gao yet, his mother ultimately decides to support him despite her reluctance to let him go because she feels that he is hurrying things. She makes him promise to look after himself and to come to her as often as he can. Meanwhile, Wei pays Gao another visit at his workplace and reminds him that she still wants a baby.

One night, Gao stops mid-sex to put on a condom but finds none on the bedside table. He promises to purchase one downstairs, but Kevin maintains that they can go on without one. Gao is adamant about getting one, much to Kevin’s dismay. Gao tells Kevin in a serious tone that he needs to say something, while Kevin answers that he is not in the mood anymore and starts to tidy up. Although Kevin initially believes Gao is making a joke out of the fact that he is HIV positive and they should have protected sex, the serious expression on Gao’s face indicates otherwise. Kevin feels agitated and asks Jo to accompany him in getting tested for HIV after discovering blood while brushing his teeth. To Kevin’s relief, the test is negative; however, the doctor tells him that there is still a window of opportunity for the virus to spread. Later on, Gao takes Kevin to his father’s birthday celebration, where he begins to feel uneasy because Wei is also there and is seated beside Gao. While they eat, Gao’s mother tells Wei to continue trying to have a baby. That evening, Kevin and Gao have unprotected sex after the former finds the latter touching himself. The following day, Wei goes to Gao’s condominium and begins smashing items with a hammer she brought. Before departing, she tells Kevin that she doesn’t need a homewrecker to wreck her house and that she can do it on her own. When Kevin meets with Wei in private, he discovers that, in contrast to what Gao had told him, she and Gao are still married and have not filed for divorce. She also informs him that they are attempting to conceive via IVF. Kevin persuades Wei to completely part ways with Gao for everyone’s sake. Wei, however, feels that she is too old to begin a new life. She doesn’t want to find someone else, even if she respects the fact that Gao is now dating Kevin.

Kevin begins to feel poorly and becomes afraid once again that he has contracted the disease from Gao after they had unprotected sex. While using the school restroom, he schedules a meeting with the testing center. He doesn’t realize that one of his students heard him on the phone. Kevin lashed out at Gao that evening, accusing him of being the reason he ended up in that predicament due to his overwhelming emotions. When Gao returns to the factory the following day, he inhales from a nitrous oxide tank and exhales with relief. As everything is going on, a student posts on social media about Kevin’s sexual orientation and AIDS diagnosis, prompting Director Lin to summon Kevin into his office. After he maintains his conviction that his sexual orientation shouldn’t affect his eligibility to teach and that he is not HIV positive, he becomes the focus of a contentious discussion between the school board and parents. Kevin asks Gao later that night if he knows anything about what happened to him at school, but Gao says he has nothing to do with it. Kevin sobs at Gao and admits that he is afraid. He then visits his mother and confesses his problem, she advises him right away that he needs to get tested to clear his name. Kevin’s mother reprimands him at first, but she later makes a promise to support him throughout. In front of his mother, Kevin sobs like a child. Upon Kevin’s return to Gao’s condominium, the receptionist informs him that Gao has been hospitalized after an accident. He immediately heads to the hospital but is denied entry or confirmation that Gao has been admitted there. Kevin ends up making a scene in the hospital as they continue to tell him to leave due to not being a family member. Kevin goes through the test requested by the school and tests negative. He then gets a call from Gao but does not hear any words from the other line. Later, the student who made the post on social media apologizes to Kevin, but he ignores him.

One day, Kevin receives a voicemail from Wei, who tells him that Gao can no longer talk, but he wishes for him to stop looking for him anymore. He also wants Kevin to know that he is glad to have met him. Wei tells Kevin that she sees him as blunt but also brave and tells him that life is not always pretty, but people learn to live with it. She ends the phone call by telling Kevin once again, just like when they met before, that he is still young and the possibilities are endless. Sometime later, Kevin goes back to his new class and introduces himself to the class. He starts the syllabus by telling them that same-sex marriages have finally been legalized in Taiwan.

Writer’s Thoughts

‘The Teacher’, an original GagaOOLala movie, is a profound and emotionally charged picture that, upon closer inspection, has a lot to say. The movie shows us the stigma of marriage and a husband and wife’s function in a traditional family, even though at first it can be seen as combating the stigma against homosexuality and health status only. For Kevin, it was being looked down upon due to his homosexuality regardless of how much he has achieved in life; for Gao, it was the responsibility of starting a family while living up to their expectations; and for Wei, it was the conviction that her age prevents her from starting over. Since there is a strong push for accurate information about HIV, it may not sit well with other viewers that Gao had not told Kevin about his HIV status before their relationship. However, it also seems to indicate that there is still a long way to go because some individuals are still afraid to be honest because of the stigma attached to it. With its complex subject matter, ‘The Teacher’ might not be to everyone’s taste, but it is a good place to start learning why it is still necessary to fight for same-sex marriage and the dissemination of knowledge against many forms of discrimination in society.
