Episode 9: I like it because it feels safe.
Shun Yu refuses to speak with Shang Zhou after the latter follows him home and confronts him about leaving during the company trip. Shang Zhou asks him why he quit, getting tired of his constant avoidance. Shun Yu does not respond to the question; instead, he simply says that others are better than him, to which Shang Zhou disagrees, saying that he is the one he wants. Shun Yu is adamant about leaving, and when he tries to open the door, Shang Zhou grabs him back and pulls up the employment contract he previously signed. Shang Zhou informs him that he must stay for a full year after signing and that, should he fail to do so, he will be required to pay several months’ salary. Shun Yu leaves Shang Zhou at the door without saying anything after realizing that the latter is determined to prevent him from leaving. Despite her sympathy for Shun Yu, Lisa makes an effort to clarify that Shang Zhou is doing impulsive things with him because he genuinely cares for him. Shun Yu begs her to persuade Shang Zhou to release him by speaking with Vice President Lee. To his shock, Lisa tells her that Vice President Lee has already made an attempt to help him but ended up fighting with him. Shang Zhou maintains that if abruptly altering Shun Yu’s contract terms is the only way to keep him around, he will do it, even though Vice President Lee makes sense in saying that the world does not revolve around him. If Shang Zhou won’t let Shun Yu go, Lisa advises him to create things that will make him want to leave instead.
Meanwhile, Shun Yu continues to be Shang Zhou’s secretary but remains unmoved by his advances, such as bringing him breakfast as before or requesting massages. He tells Shang Zhou up front that he will no longer perform any duties as a secretary that do not fall under his job description or that will cost him extra. When money is brought up, a displeased Shang Zhou pulls Shun Yu up against him and demands to know how much he needs to pay for all the things or touches he will allow him. Shang Zhou walks out of the room after realizing Shun Yu remains unaffected by him all. Later that day, Shun Yu runs into Vice President Lee and tries to act like nothing is unusual, but the latter sees right through him and invites him to talk. Vice President Lee begins to ask about his circumstances with Shang Zhou and comments that he is a difficult person to get along with. To his surprise, Shun Yu still defends him despite his initial complaint that they probably upset each other. Vice President Lee reveals that Shang Zhou changed Shu Yu’s contract from the one he had previously signed in an attempt to force him to stay. Vice President Lee questions Shun Yu about why he believes someone will do that when he asks why Shang Zhou would do it. He then explains to Shun Yu that Shang Zhou was not taught how to express what he truly meant because he was raised by a strict mother who expected him to be the best. Shun Yu understands that Shang Zhou may be struggling to communicate his true feelings for him and isn’t joking around as much as he initially believed during their drunken encounter. Vice President Lee advises him to talk to Shang Zhou, as he knows that the latter is not someone who would go above and beyond just to play around.
