‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ director Matthew Lopez emphasized the importance of the film’s “audacious” ending.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Lopez talked about why he kept the book’s original joyful ending for the film, saying that when he was younger, the limited stories available about being queer were always about “death and dying.”
Lopez added that one of the reasons that drew him initially to the film’s story was that it had a happy ending. He also stated that there were not many happy endings in queer movies when he was growing up.
Known as the “bury your gays” trope, a lot of queer movies have historically ended tragically which became so prevalent that a nonprofit organization, LGBT Fans Deserve Better, was formed which advocated for positive queer representation in the media.
