Singapore’s most provocative gay short film to date, BDSM, is now streaming on YouTube!
Following Getaway, Dear Straight People released a 27-minute-long short film “BDSM: Boys Desire Spare Money”. It stars Josh Lim and Jayden Lim and is written and directed by Jet Ho. The short film was filmed on iPhone 13 Pro Max in association with Gravity Film and was officially selected for Korean International Short Film Festival 2023 and Lift-off sessions 2023 @Pinewood Studios in the UK. The director shares his thoughts upon receiving the news on his Instagram post:
When I received this news, I was so elated. I almost gave up. Nomination is already a form of affirmation for me. It is not about winning, just doing all the things that we love as a team. There was tears of joys because as a filmmaker, this is perhaps the most number of times I faced rejections, especially from the most unexpected people. I was told that I was just wasting my money. Everywhere that I go seemed like a dead end. The amount of stress was unimaginable but the passion is incredible.
‘BDSM’ was self funded, self directed and presenting an original Singapore story to the world. I was told by haters that the film would not make it. Facing challenges from IMDA and hardcore critics, it was a crazy process to internalise that ‘hate’ into inspirations. I guess the criticism and “stubbornness” in me has maybe provide me the growth that was needed. Life is full of hardship, anyway.
This incredibly difficult experimental film (shot by iPhone 13 pro max) was made all possible by all the people who I really wanna thank.
