Trans Actor Nava Mau Stars In Stalker Series ‘Baby Reindeer’

Trans actress Nava Mau is taking the spotlight in the new thriller series ‘Baby Reindeer.’

The Netflix drama is based on real events that tell the terrifying story of Scottish comedian Richard Gadd who was harassed and stalked by a middle-aged woman he met at the pub where he works.

Mau plays Teri, the woman that Gadd’s character, Donny, meets in a dating app.

Teri is unimpressed by the way Donny treats her, completely unaware of the harassment Donny receives from Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) whom he met after a simple cup of tea out of pure kindness which then led to seven episodes of chilling encounters.

“Baby Reindeer,” according to Gadd, is Martha’s nickname for him when she began stalking him.

The drama is already garnering rave reviews despite only being released on April 11, Thursday, on Netflix. The series was rated four out of five stars by The Guardian, The Independent, and The Standard.

On getting the role, the 31-year-old trans actress said in Netflix’s fan event Tudum, “When I was reading the script, it felt like the first time reading a character written by someone who actually had known and loved a trans woman.”

Mau said that it “felt like an honor” to be able to read the script due to Gadd’s vulnerability and that there is a “light that pulsates out of that, so all the characters in the story are cast in that light” which she saw in the character of Teri.

Mau’s acting credits include HBO’s queer teen comedy-drama ‘Genera+ion’ as Ana, the transgender aunt of lesbian character Greta. She has also collaborated behind the scenes for Laverne Cox’s documentary about trans lives called ‘Disclosure.’

‘Baby Reindeer’ is available to stream on Netflix now.
