The Story of a Chinese Transgender Woman Unfolds in ‘Sunken Plum’

The short film ‘Sunken Plum’ is now available to stream on GagaOOLala!

‘Sunken Plum’ is a 19-minute short film that was released in 2017. It is an official selection of the 2018 KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, 2018 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival, and 2018 ShanghaiPRIDE. The short stars Xiang Gu and Yinmeng Yu, and is directed by Xiaoxi Xu and Roberto F. Canuto. It revolves around a transgender woman embarking on her journey to her birthplace.

Working at a nightclub in Chengdu, a transgender Chinese woman receives an unexpected visit from her cousin, informing her that the mother she has brushed aside, has died. As the only “son”, she feels obligated to return to her birthplace for the sake of her family, even though she’ll have to hide her true self from those that once shared her past.
