Saltburn’ Director Says She Would Have Excluded Barry Keoghan’s Iconic Nude Dancing Scene

‘Saltburn’ director Emerald Fennell has opened up about the iconic and highly-discussed nude dancing scene by lead actor Barry Keoghan.

In an interview with W Magazine, the 38-year-old director said that she would have been prepared to “get rid of” the iconic “Murder on the Dancefloor” naked scene had Keoghan felt uncomfortable by it.

“The thing for me is, if you want to make stuff that’s close to the bone, that’s outrageous and fun and camp and silly, you need to create a space where people feel like they’re safe, that they’re not being shoved off a cliff and that we’re all doing it together,” she said in the interview.

Fennell added that if Keoghan had a change of heart and said that he did not want to include the dance scene at the end of the movie, then she would have “got rid” of it because “consent is ongoing and everyone has a say.”

The said iconic dance scene involved Keoghan’s character Oliver Quick dancing in the nude to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s recently-popularized song “Murder On The Dance Floor” after a coke-fuelled experience in the Saltburn mansion.

Keoghan previously told Variety that it was his direction in the film that inspired the graveyard sex scene, saying his character was not written to do that but he wanted to see what would happen if he “leveled up the obsession” which then led him to ask Fennell for a closed set so he could try something out. That ended with the scene appearing in the final edit of ‘Saltburn.’
