‘Red White & Royal Blue’ Director Explains Why Some Things Were Removed In Final Film

‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Director Matthew Lopez finally spilled the truth as to why he had to make a few changes in the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s best-selling queer romantic comedy novel.

In an exclusive interview with People, Lopez said, “Anything that wasn’t about Alex and Henry didn’t belong in the film. Anything that didn’t feed into that story had to go. It’s just the logic of movie storytelling. There’s actually less than 20 seconds of the film in which one or the other doesn’t appear.”

Indeed, some things have differed — albeit not significantly — in the adaptation. For example, Alex’s sister is nowhere to be found, his parents were not divorced, and Queen Mary was changed into a homophobic grandfather king, King James III.

“I was making decisions that maybe I’d have to explain to the fans later on, but at the end of the day, I knew what I was doing was in the best interest of the film,” Lopez continued. “I am one of the fans, and I knew the best way to deliver something fans would appreciate is to make sure I delivered a good film.”

Of course, these changes had to go through the author’s approval, and McQuiston did not have any qualms about them and in fact, loved the adaptation. In an Instagram post, McQuiston showed their appreciation and love for the book’s transformation, saying that it “has become much bigger than me—something gorgeous and perfect in its own way, beaming out into a bigger world.”

‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ stars Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Henry. It currently streams on Prime Video.
