‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Director Matthew Lopez finally spilled the truth as to why he had to make a few changes in the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s best-selling queer romantic comedy novel.
In an exclusive interview with People, Lopez said, “Anything that wasn’t about Alex and Henry didn’t belong in the film. Anything that didn’t feed into that story had to go. It’s just the logic of movie storytelling. There’s actually less than 20 seconds of the film in which one or the other doesn’t appear.”
Indeed, some things have differed — albeit not significantly — in the adaptation. For example, Alex’s sister is nowhere to be found, his parents were not divorced, and Queen Mary was changed into a homophobic grandfather king, King James III.
