Queer Film ‘The Persian Version’ To Get International Release Soon

Sundance Film Festival winner ‘The Persian Version’ will be hitting theaters soon as Sony Pictures Classics acquired distribution rights to the film!

‘The Persian Version’ is a 2023 American comedy-drama about a young and queer Iranian-American filmmaker who gets into conflict with her mother while also learning about her family secret.

The Sundance Film Festival synopsis for the film says: “Coming from two countries at odds with each other, Iranian-American Leila (Layla Mohammadi) strives to find balance and embrace her opposing cultures, while boldly challenging the labels society is so quick to project upon her. When her family reunites in New York City for her father’s heart transplant, Leila navigates her relationships from arm’s length in an effort to keep her “real” life separate from her family life. However, when her secret is unceremoniously revealed, so are the distinct parallels between her life and that of her mother, Shireen.”

‘The Persian Version’ won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival, namely, the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic Competition and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. It is directed by

Sony Pictures Classics, in a statement, described ‘The Persian Version’ as “an eloquent film about family and freedom while at the same time grand entertainment.” It is directed by Maryam Keshavarz who is also known for another queer film, ‘Circumstance’, which explores homosexuality in modern Iran. ‘The Persona Version’ is Maryam’s directorial debut at Sundance.

As of writing time, there is no date yet for its release. Sony Pictures Classics will partner with Stage 6 Films in the release of the film. Sony Pictures Releasing International will handle its international release.
