Nico Tortorella Stars in ‘The Mattachine Family’, A Dramedy Film about Gay Fatherhood

Nico Tortorella

‘Younger’ and ‘Scream 4’ actor Nico Tortorella is starring in a new dramedy film that will explore fatherhood through a queer perspective.

Titled ‘The Mattachine Family’, Tortorella will play the role of Thomas who is left wanting to have a child after his foster child returns to his mother. This leaves him “torn on his feelings toward fatherhood and his relationship” with his husband, Oscar, who will be played by Juan Pablo Di Pace (‘Mama Mia!’). Tortorella will also be the “self-reflective” narrator of the film.

‘The Mattachine Family’ is titled after the historic gay rights organization Mattachine Society. The Mattachine Steps in Los Angeles was named after it, as well, in honor of the organization’s founder, Harry Hay.

Aside from Tortorella and Di Pace, the cast will also include Heather Matarazzo (‘Welcome to the Dollhouse’ and ‘The Princess Diaries’), Jake Choi (‘Single Parents’), Carl Clemons-Hopkins (‘Hacks’), and Garrett Clayton (‘Teen Beach Movie’). Emily Hampshire (‘Schitt’s Creek’) will play Thomas’ best friend Leah who is grieving her miscarriage. She joins Thomas and Oscar as they mourn their losses together and figures out what family actually means.

‘The Mattachine Family’ is based on a story written by director Andy Vallentine and his husband Danny, who is also the screenplay writer and producer. This means that the staff and most of the cast as queer, adding another important layer of queerness to the film.

‘The Mattachine Family’ premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) last May 12. SIFF describes it as “a modern-day queer dramedy film that perfectly captures self-reflection on love, relationships, and family is rare. To also make it genuinely funny and heartfelt is a real movie-watching treat.”

It will continue to stream via SIFF’s streaming platform from May 22 through 28.
