Kristen Stewart On Queer Movies Centered On Queerness: “Don’t Want to Stand on a F—ing Soapbox”

Bisexual actor Kristen Stewart has opened up about the new sapphic movie ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ and why she thinks the era of queer films being centered on queerness is “done.”

At the press conference for her new movie ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ at the Berlin Film Festival, the 33-year-old actor said she believes that the era of queer films “being so pointedly only that is done.”

“I think we can’t keep doing that thing where we tell everyone how to feel and sort of pat each other on the back and receive brownie points for providing space for marginalized voices, and only in the capacity that they are allowed to speak about that alone,” she said.

She added that the era of queer films being so centered on sexuality is over and that it could keep happening but is “inherent to how we are moving forward.”

In 2020, Stewart starred in the first lesbian Christmas romantic comedy produced by a major Hollywood studio titled ‘Happiest Season’. The actor said that while she enjoyed the experience, she is not looking for queer stories that are more than the character’s sexuality.

“I’m really kind of into the idea of unearthing sidelined perspectives and not making it all about the reasons that they’re sidelined, but their actual experience. What they love, what their desires are, where they come from, where they want to go. And then not feeling like you always have to stand on a fucking soapbox and be everyone’s spokesperson,” she said.

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ will have its international debut in Berlin on Sunday night as part of its Special Gala section, and is set for theatrical release through A24 on March 8.
