Josh O’Connor Talks ‘The History Of Sound’, “Fire” Chemistry With Paul Mescal

‘The Crown’ star Josh O’Connor opened up about his upcoming queer movie with Paul Mescal, ‘The History of Sound’.

In the midst of promoting his other queer polyamory movie ‘Challengers’ alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist, O’Connor talked about the Oliver Hermanus-helmed movie ‘The History of Sound’, a romance film about two men who fall in love during World War I.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actor revealed that the film is finally in production.

“We’re still in the midst of it, but it’s very beautiful. It’s something Paul and I and Oliver Hermanus have been attached to for a long time,” O’Connor said. “So it’s a great relief to be making it, and I think it’ll be something very special.”

The 33-year-old actor also spoke to Indie Wire to promote his other movie, ‘La Chimera’, and reacted to Hermanu‘s statement that he has “fire” chemistry with co-star Mescal.

“I don’t know what he means,” he confessed. “Paul and I are friends and have been for years. There’s a great energy between us, and we’ve also been attached to that film for such a long time. We are just really excited to be making it. I can’t talk to whether we’ve got real chemistry, but I think we have.”

O’Connor and Mescal’s casting opened the discourse surrounding straight actors getting cast to play gay roles.

Mescal played a gay character in last year’s ghostly gay film ‘All of Us Strangers’ alongside gay actor Andrew Scott. Meanwhile, aside from ‘Challengers’, O’Connor played another queer character in the 2017 movie ‘God’s Own Country.’ And in case you missed it, O’Connor is currently in talks to headline another upcoming Luca Guadagnino gay romance film.

‘The History of Sound’ is slated to premiere in 2025.
